Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633–1707)

Vauban, Sébastien Le Prestre de (vō-bo‘). A great French military engineer; born at St. Leger de Foucher, Burgundy, May 15, 1633; died at Paris, March 30, 1707. He published nothing during his life, but since his death some of his MSS. have been printed at various times; among them: ‘Notes for Instruction in the Conduct of Sieges and the Defense of Places’ (1740); ‘Marshal de Vauban’s Hours of Idleness’ (3 vols., 1842); ‘Military Works’ (3 vols., 1793); ‘Attack and Siege of Strong Places.’
