Tomás Antônio Gonzaga (1744–1807?)

Gonzaga, Tomás Antônio (gon-zä’gä) [Known also as “Dirceu”]. A Portuguese poet; born in Oporto in Aug. 1744; died at Mozambique in 1807 or 1809. Graduating from Coimbra, he emigrated to Brazil, where he conceived a violent passion for one Doña Maria Seixas, who inspired his celebrated ‘Marilia,’ the most exquisite lyrics in Portuguese literature.
