Folk-Songs: The Golden Girdle

Translation of Francesca Alexander

I AM young and little;—only just fifteen,

Yet in Love’s book my name is written down.

They have taken off my maiden garments sheen,

And put me on to-day my bridal gown.

“Black gown and silver girdle,” so they say,

“Love one, and let a hundred go their way.”

“Black gown and golden girdle,” say to me,

“Love only one, and let a hundred be.”
