QUOTATION: You will therefore send me none but Natives, and Men of some property, if you have them.
ATTRIBUTION: General GEORGE WASHINGTON, letter to his regimental commanders, April 30, 1777.—The Writings of George Washington, ed. John C. Fitzpatrick, vol. 7, p. 495 (1932).

Washington wanted a contingent of guards he could trust. This order is often quoted as “Put none but Americans on guard tonight.”
