Week 4 Assignment: Key Revenue Analysis Tashia Fouch Capella University BUS-4072: Analysis for Financial Management Professor Robert Watson February 2024
Analysis of Microsoft Corporation's June 30, 2012 10-K Annual Report 1. Where are the company's revenues coming from? 2. How would you interpret this in relation to the company's identified strategy if you were a manager? 3. What information do you think that you might have access to, as a manager of the firm, that an outsider would not? Microsoft s 6/30/2012 10-K reveals various sources of revenue for the company. Their Windows PC division s sales to business customers increased 4% (sales to consumers decreased by 1%). Over half of the revenue for Microsoft s server and tools division (55%) came from multi-year licensing agreements. Microsoft s online servicing division, which deals directly with consumers helping them with online tasks and connectivity, was responsible for some of the company s revenues. Microsoft s service and entertainment division markets consumer entertainment services and products. This division generated 80% of Microsoft s sales revenue. Microsoft s strategy is mainly focused on cloud-based services with smart devices, which is a very competitive industry. There is a proliferation of other companies that are making enormous investments in cloud-based infrastructure and services. From the 10-K, it is evident that Microsoft is heavily investing in research and development. They expend a large amount of resources there, which isn t very profitable in the short-term. Cloud technology is an extremely competitive industry, even moreso now than it was when this report was originally filed in June 2012, and it will only continue to grow. Protecting their intellectual property rights is a major concern for Microsoft. If I were a manager at Microsoft, it s very likely that I would have access to crucial security information as well as all kinds of research. As mentioned previously, Microsoft has invested heavily in research and development, and as a manager, I would be privy to current research and development projects, products, services and status for all of those. I would also be privy to crucial security information. With the competitiveness of the tech industry, security is of tantamount importance, especially keeping the company s information and development pipeline safe from phishing and cyber attacks from competitors and other malicious players. Now look at the same information from a stockholder's viewpoint. Keep in mind that as a stockholder, you only have access to public documents and answer these questions: 1. What is your interpretation of the company's revenues? 2. Does this make you comfortable with your investment? As a stockholder, seeing that Microsoft relies upon aggregate revenues from multiple divisions within the company, that would make me fairly comfortable with investing, because even if one division suffers losses at some point, you will likely still have strong revenues in other divisions. Tech is one of the best places to invest today, and has been for the past twenty or so years. I currently hold Microsoft stock and its value has continuously increased for the most part, with minor fluctuations here and there, but nothing devastating to my finances.
