Everyone is likely to experience some form of discrimination or prejudice; as is anyone capable of acting prejudiced towards others. On April 5th, 1968, a teacher in Riceville, Iowa named Jane Elliot conducted an experiment with her third grade class that dealt with the concept of discrimination; and was documented in Peters’ 1985 ‘A Class Divided’. The exercise originally took place the day after Martin Luther King was assassinated. The documentary is an eye opener to the world of racism and discrimination. Bucher (2010) describes racism as “discrimination based on the belief that one race is superior to another” (97). According to Bucher (2010) “discrimination is defined as the
How do your critical factors align with the roles that were portrayed by your IPPE-3 Clinical Instructors throughout the past two weeks? What specific activities did you engage in during IPPE-3 that capitalized upon your critical factors?
The video “A class divided” shows a teacher teaching 3rd graders about empathy. Empathy according to the book is described as the ability to re-create another person’s perspective. Sympathy is your view of another person’s situation. The saying, “Walking in someone else’s shoes” is commonly used to describe empathy. It’s not how you feel about the person’s situation; it’s how you would feel if you were put in their situation.
I printed out this email and I highlighted the answers we were to bubble in. However, once we began to bubble in the answers there was a problem. The overwhelming majority of the students did not know their address. This created a major problem because I was given only one paper with the students’ address. Thus, I had to spend the majority of the time helping students with their addresses. Around 10:50 Tammy Becker walked in and told my class that we were being too loud (I was doing my best helping students fill out their address). She said we were to start the test at 11:05 am. As a result, I made sure we did start the test at 11:05 am. At 11:05 am the students began testing. I followed everything we were instructed to do during the PSAT.
This week's reflection assignment consisted on us watching a video. The video is titled "SKS trigger job", and is narrated by Iraqveteran8888. The website hosting this video is youtube.com.
The best class I have taken here at UNL is Human Anatomy (BIOS 214). I am currently enrolled in this class for the fall semester but I believe I have gained more knowledge in this class to help me in the future than any class previous to it. Anatomy is a very strenuous course and takes a great amount of time during the week to learn the material given but worth the hard work at the end of the semester. I want to enter physical therapy school after my undergraduate degree and this course really guides you in that direction of professional school. It builds on topics learned in other classes and really fills in concepts that you previously didn’t know or take the time to learn during other classes. This course really gives you an understanding
Last semester I went through the James Madison University, College of Business 300 project where my small group and I develop a company while creating a business plan. This extensive project helped develop my hard and soft skills. The hands-on project taught me about finance, operations, management, and marketing, by showing me how their different concepts merge together to create a successful business. Overcoming different challenges along
Dear, Dr Segal-Argelston and professor Williams, many past experiences I've had with a writing class all pertain to my years in high school. I have had many English classes but very few writing classes. Though I was in an English class most of my time, my class did very little writing. It wasn't until my junior year of high school that I had an actual writing class. This writing class taught me many tips and tricks for writing a good essay. By the end of this class my writing skills were strengthened significantly because I had to write three to four essays a week. A weakness I have related to writing would be trying to bring out my thoughts on a subject and formulate them into a well-rounded sentence. Different parts of the sentence grammatical
To summarize what I retained in class, I would have to say that I mastered how to learn. I obtained a better understanding on how to evaluate participants’ information can lead to various way to improve our program leisure experience. For example, I believe that two surveys for our evaluation plan would be helpful with the programming format which enables the patrons to look at what they really like about our program and what they don’t like. I also learned how to implement various procedures when it comes to event planning for improving the quality of life within a community. With our program plan, it taught us how to develop and conduct a program management, marketing/promotion, animation (meaning how things in the program will be unveiled), and an evaluation
In order to produce an effective and well developed essay that clearly reflected my purpose to a distinct audience, I maintained a structuralized system throughout the entire process. I made sure to pay close attention to every step taken and self reflect on whether or not the change was an effective step closer to my final draft. In fact, I set up a system of comments and revisions for myself, in order to prioritize development. Not only this, but I also attempted at demonstrating writing techniques that were reflected in other reading passages discussed in class. Overall, I was able to produce a final draft of an informative narrative in which I reflected my purpose to a distinct audience.
As I have learned through experience, diverse classrooms full of “windows and mirrors” are the best learning environments for me. By having different perspectives, or windows, in a classroom, it enables students to glean from various experiences. Mirrors, or similar people with similar experiences, are also important to have in a classroom setting so that students can relate to each other and feel comfortable. Over the years of my school career, I have found myself stuck seeing many windows, and not many mirrors, due to lack of diversity in the schools I have attended, but once given the opportunity to learn in a more diverse classroom, my experience improved dramatically.
I learned a lot from the Sim4 Project simulation game. The best part for this game was that everyone in class was playing against each other and not with the artificial intelligence, which helped in creating the environment for students, where they can actually apply their strategies by bidding for different resources. This game taught us how to run a project and how to handle a company, but we have to work ourselves in applying strategies, thus the best strategy to win the simulation game is giving your best shot by thinking smartly. Besides that going through the game, I learned other different
Undertaking the microteaching in our tutorial and looking back on the feedback given allowed me to reflect on my strengths and weaknesses when conducting a class lesson. While I felt nervous and anxious, I was perceived to be confident and clear in front of the classroom. Having this type of feedback has truly inspired me to believe in myself more. Research states that ‘high levels of self-efficacy among teachers - defined as belief in their ability to teach, engage students and manage a classroom - have a positive impact on students' attainment’ (Wiggins, 2015). This research gives me even more inspiration to be confident. Being a confident teacher, a leader in the classroom will directly affect the students who I teach and will hopefully inspire them to feel confident as a person and in the work they do in class. ‘Teaching is leadership, and leadership begins in the classroom as teachers, act with meaning, seeking greater learning for their students and colleagues (Churchill, Et al, 2015). In the future, I will be working on my power in the classroom, while I want it to be evident, I also don’t want it to be overly exerted.
In the state of Texas, to ensure that children are properly retaining the information taught in school, it is suggested that teachers use different instructional methods in the classroom. This way, a lesson can cater to a larger group of students rather than just a small portion of them. By creating a more inclusive lesson and environment, students are more likely to be interactive in class discussions. They will also show better results when their knowledge is tested, because of the visual, kinesthetic, and auditory connections made from meeting their learning needs. The learning styles that I witnessed teachers use in their classroom to create this effect involved group work, visual aids, and auditory readings. My interest for finding the best learning methods teachers can use, to reach more students comes from a personal connection to the topic. Being diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age, I remember being taken out of the classroom to work on phonics and develop my reading skills. What I did not remember and wanted to see in observations, was when I was put back in the general classroom, specifically English, what did teachers do to make sure I was able to grasp the lesson. While I know teachers were not specifically teaching to my learning needs, they did read aloud and have handouts that helped feed into my understanding. Taking the information from observations and personal experiences, I wanted to research the linguistic learning that takes place in English classrooms and how it can connect to visual learning, auditory learning, and other styles of teaching that could be beneficial to students.
“Education is not the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire.” This is a quote from an Irish poet named W.B. Yeats. This statement can be a powerful force for the life of an educator. As a student learning the art of teaching, I have been placed in a couple of different schools to gain more experience and insight to what I will be doing for a career. This semester, the experience came from a school named Eastwood Elementary, located in rural Pemberville, OH. They have a newly renovated school and state of the art facilities to use. For my field experiences this last semester, I was involved in ProjectSuccess. For this project, we were given the opportunity to tutor certain students to help improve their reading skills. Lessons for each session were provided and I was given two students. I tutored Jessica, a kindergartener and Davis, a fourth grader. Through ProjectSuccess, I have been able to connect theories learned in class to how tutoring was going. Different theories that were connected involve the sociocultural theory, Social Cognitive theory, and Piaget’s theory of Cognitive Development.
