My favorite interest is Astronomy as a hobby. Longtime interest since I was a youth. Not possible before because of time constraints, such as work and family responsibilities. As a retired person, now I have the time and peace of mind to devote myself to this fascinating hobby. I always had an inclination towards exact sciences; I have worked as an Electronics maintenance technician and as Information Technology specialist. What drove me into Astronomy? As you get mature, you start to ponder about how things are the way they are.The Universe poses a formidable mystery for mankind. How the Universe came to be? Is the Big Bang Theory the ultimate answer to the Universe evolution? So many questions, yet so little answers. Well, oddly enough, my previous …show more content…
The outcome was more than satisfactory: from the very beginning of the course I was able to construct the needed theoretical background that would allow me to understand concepts in a whole. For me, learning is like climbing a staircase, that is, one step a time. Since there were no grades or exams, I felt, for the first time in my life, to enjoy learning for the pleasure of it. Having other people of about the same age group and similar education was also good because questions were asked by people that have a life full of experiences. Naturally information is exchanged among the students about good books and web information on the subjects. You would be surprised to know how many people that, apart from being old, have a rich and clear perspective of life in its many features. Also, some of them are my pen pals (e-mail, naturally) and we often exchange ideas and opinions. After finishing the course I had the required guidance to advance in the field by myself so I opened an account in Twitter to be informed of recent discoveries in the fields of my
When I first saw Saturn through the astronomical telescope at the Science Museum, I knew astronomy opened a new world for me, a world where myriad spectacular phenomena exist in our wonderful nature without us even noticing. That was the time astronomy left an indelible mark in my mind.
Over the course, as I began to see all the material and work come together, I felt a sense of accomplishment and felt very proud of what I had done over the semester. This learning experience has definitely opened my eyes and opened new doors for me professionally already.
Being in this class gave me insight on the way that I learn. I’ve had my share of jobs along with schooling and various other learning experiences. Some good, some bad but I can honestly say that I never noticed the pattern on how I learn. Now I know I learn more by being more of a hands on person. Also utilizing my thinking and problem solving skills has helped with my growth. I also found it important to use my reflective observation too. Mostly combining different learning styles have helped me in life to understand the way I learn and the benefits that could come if I use my strengths to further my ambitions.
If I were to describe this course to a friend I would say this class is more than what anyone expects and is extremely eye-opening. It is not like a normal studies class, where it has boring content. It has content that is insightful and allows you to really think about the issues at hand. I would encourage a friend to take it because it is not only a fun class but very informative. I would prepare them for the reality of this class. This class does not just touch the surface of issues we have in society, but it goes much deeper.
Overall, I have been very impressed with how this course is going so far. I appreciate having a short presentation on the topic each week then having the opportunity to discuss the topic with other group members. I have learned a lot from the readings as well as from other group members. By having everyone share their ideas and thoughts, I feel that I have gotten more out of this course than I had expected. With everyone coming from different educational backgrounds and experiences, it has been interesting to be exposed to different ideas and perceptions on some of these topics. In addition, having group members question and challenge my ideas have promoted me to think more in-depth and explore more closely about the topics. As of right now, there seems to be no issues with my group. Everyone participates in weekly discussions as well as writing the summary. Ideas and opinions are shared in a respectful manner
In summary, this course has really educated my view of being a teacher as well as being able to interact with today’s diverse and fluctuating educational setting. Therefore, the discussions were very good ways in understanding how
For as long as I could see the stars, I knew I wanted to reach them. Gazing at the stars gave me time to question how the world worked, and kindled my passion for science. The world of science intrigues me because it varies on so many levels. It ranges from the study of the smallest particles in the world to the research of the seemingly never-ending universe. With so much to learn, I never want to be absent in class and miss the opportunity of discovering something new. Science has influenced me to be curious as to why things work, and motivates me to find the explanations behind things.
After taking AP Chemistry, I knew that I wanted to study chemistry in college. I also have been a very inquisitive person my whole life, wondering why things are and how things worked. My inquisitive nature and love of chemistry is why chemical engineering appeals to me. I am drawn to Biomedical engineering due to its application of both chemistry and biology to solve medical problems. Doing a complete 360, I am interested in art history, because not only do I find art fascinating, but I also find it mesmerizing how artists visually represent and were inspired by the world around them.
"I would like to die on Mars. Just not on impact."- Elon Musk. Space exploration is tough. The slightest problem can turn what seemed a successful mission into a disaster, making it imperative to prepare for every possible situation. As such, there is a great demand for high quality engineers in this field. I plan to be one of those engineers, and Washington Aerospace Scholars is one of the best opportunities to help me accomplish this. There is a lot I can gain from it; however, it does not come without difficulty. WAS requires dedication, strategy, and commitment to succeed. I believe I can offer these through my diligence towards STEM, time proven work ethic, and experience in similar courses.
The art of questioning has always been a great interest to me. Asking a question, and finding the answers to it through experimentations, and observations is the greatest form of science to exist. When I was in middle school, one of the movies that I have found fascinating was Apollo 13. This is a movie about three astronauts that tried to land on the moon, but failed because of an explosion that occur on their spaceship. With a major, and life threatening issue to deal with, the scientists at NASA started forming questions, and using those questions to conduct experiments to find a way to bring these three astronauts back on earth safely. Ever since I left that movie theatre, I wanted to work at NASA. I had a dedicated notebook that contained
From day one, I noticed the relative ease of the course. The two friendly instructors welcomed the entire class, and they presented the material in a simple and comprehensible manner. My seven classmates and I bonded immediately. I recall
Looking back at my beliefs before the start of this course, I would have to say I have learned how wrong and misguided I was. I thought I was fairly knowledgeable about older adults, however I came to understand that I had much to
I get excited when I get to put my personal experience into a project or assignment. For science, I love studying about medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease, disorder and injury in non-human animals. There are a lot of technology aspects that I enjoy but my favorite is the social media services. I think it’s great that there is such a big outlet out there that provides us with communication all around the world. Another aspect of science that I enjoy is makeup and cosmetology.
I would like to be in Honors Science because I am ready to take on the challenge, my passion for science and the natural world has grown and I am a self motivated learner that is always willing to learn new material. Honors Science would give me the opportunity to do each and every one of those things as well as challenging me with more complex things. My passion for science has grown and as well as my curiosity for the natural world. Science is made up of so many different attributes and topics which makes it so interesting to learn about. This year especially, I have learned about chemistry and what it is, DNA and what it is made out of, and waves and technology and what it does to help our world.
My career choice is Planetary Science. The reason I picked this job is because, I remember when I was in about third or fourth grade. I really wanted a telescope to see what the moon looks like close up. One day, I asked my parents if we can get a telescope. When I got one it was a tiny small red telescope. I really wanted to see the moon, but in Grays Harbor you can’t really see the sky at night because of how cloudy it is. But whenever I got the time to look up at the night sky I would take advantage of that. I remember when I first got to use my telescope, I was super excited. I was so fascinated to see the moon so close up. I wanted to look at different planets but my telescope didn't go out that far and that the planets are too far
