Comparing Christian Bible And The Sky World Creation Story

The Native Americans created their own version of the creation story, as well as the Judeo-Christians. Both stories are very similar in a way but also different. As one believes in God, the heavens, and the Earth and the other in Skywomen, the Skyworld, and the Earth.

Popul Vuh shares a great many similarities with the creation story in Genesis from the Bible. Just as the Plumed Serpent created the earth by saying the word “Earth”, God of the Bible created the heavens and the earth in the world (Tedlock 524). In the Native American version, the woman came and made everything herself. In the Native American version of Earth, there were no rules for what to do and what not to do. In the Christian version, they could do anything available except eat the fruit on the tree. Since Eve ate the fruit she told told Adam to eat the fruit and so he did too. The differences that are in the stories, Iroquois first. The iroquois have the animals that go down and help the sky goddess get soil to live on but only one lives through it to get her land so she doesn't stay on the turtle’s back. One reason that both Greek and Genesis creation stories are different is because the Gods in both stories create the universe in different ways. For example, “one half of the shell rose into the air and became the sky and the other became the earth.”(Greek) another example is, “in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” This shows that both stories are different because the earth was created in different way in both stories. Another difference that both creation stories have is that they both have different amounts of time in which they created the earth. Both stories have the universe being made by one thing, while the modern story says a tiny point the Chineses story says an egg. While both things are different it is interesting that both stories have the universe starting from one spot. Also the modern scientific story says that while the universe was being formed energy was everywhere causing chaos with explosions and creations of things just like in the Chineses story where the egg was filled with chaos. The story of creation has been a topic of speculation for decades. The people of many generations have asked questions like, “How did we get here?”, “How was the earth made?”, “How was Man made?”, and “Is there a higher power responsible for all of this?”. These questions we not really answered until the theories of modern science were proved in the 1800’s. However, before this, people created their own stories or myths to explain creation as it related to their world and culture. Every culture was thought to have its own, unique creation myth. These stories are associated with rituals and beliefs of their unique culture.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said: “Nothing is rich but the inexhaustible wealth of nature. She knows us only surfaces, but she is a million fathoms deep” (Sagan 1). In this quote, Emerson means ‘she’ as the Universe; therefore, by this quote he means to say that the Universe only shows us her surface. In reality, the more we find out about the Universe, the less we know about her since she is ‘million fathoms deep’ (Ralph Waldo Emerson). The Universe is a vast and unknown place, it’s really difficult to determine when and where or how the universe is formed. Many, in reality, have only “devised a ‘model’ or a ‘masks’ fitted on the fact of the unknown universe” (Wil van Breugel: “Masks of the Cosmos).

A creation story is a supernatural story or explanation that describes the beginnings of humanity, earth, life, and the universe. Creation stories written great time periods away from one another are shown to be very different. Our earliest creation story, the Atra-hasis and a more recent one, the Yijing were written centuries away from one another, this can be proved by the beliefs of the people. The Atra-hasis told its people to worship the gods and complete their tasks whereas the Yijing only described how man could utilize the earth for further development. Similarly, the Atra-hasis and Rig Veda have the same differences. When written in different time periods, creation stories do vary.

The second story is still about how god created the earth but this one has many differences than the first story. It makes God's Creation of the world seem more hands on. He first created man by sculpting him with dust and clay until God saw it was perfect and literally breathed life into humanity. The first truth of this story is that we are God's perfect creation. In Genesis 2:7 "then the Lord God formed Man out of the dust of the ground and breathed in his nostrils the breath of life. Another truth is that God breathed life into man which is a very intamite thing to do. It says in Genesis 2:7 that God "breathed in his nostrils the breath of life." After God formed man, he then created the Garden of Eden for man to live in. God saw that the man needed a helper to reproduce so he created to all kinds of animals to see which ones would be a good helper to man but none fit. The two creation stories may share a few similarities but they also have some differences the creation of earth includes humans on the sixth day they were created along with animals. Humans were a shining achievement on the list of things that god created in those six days but it wasn’t the only thing on that list and on the 7 day he looked back on all his work with pride and sacrificed the seven days in honor of his hard work. The second chapter of genesis has an opposite focus from the first it leaves the details of the creation of earth by the weigh side and focuses on the detail of the beginning of man. The story of Adam and his creation paints a different picture of the absolute beginning of life as it is today details that just don’t exist in the first chapter of genesis. Adam was appointed by god to name all his new creation Adam named them all and at that point came to realization that god had yet to create an equal to him so then god took a rib from Adam and created a woman named Eve finally an equal to Adam was created. Each chapter gives us an insight to different elements of humans and their creation but with each story comes details that can’t be found in the other two different points of view of the same creation of all things.
