Decision Support Systems provide business owners with business intelligence necessary to remain competitive and operate profitably. An owner of music store needs access to many different types of data to predict customer’s needs and ensure the appropriate inventory will be in stock when needed. Too much inventory will drain financial resources and take up valuable shelf space and, in contrast, not having the inventory customers want will result in missed opportunities for sales. The Decision Support System for a music store would provide the most value to its owner if all features can be easily utilized, both internal and external data can be stored, and data can be easily analyzed.
Ease of Use The Decision Support System must have a user interface that provides the music store owner with a means to easily input data and retrieve the business intelligence needed to make the best decisions. Technology of any kind that is not user friendly or is challenging to understand will not be used to its fullest capacity. A music store owner would expect to see charts and graphs that can be easily filtered or manipulated to translate a broad range of data into small easy to understand pieces. Information that is needed routinely such as top selling albums or artists, inventory levels, and total sales should be included on a dashboard for quick viewing at any time. The ability to drill down to detail by specific genres or time periods may prove useful when data mining is desired.
As we discuss the possibility of emerging into business intelligence software we must keep in mind the overall purpose of using any type of software is to reach strategic goals in order to increase market shares. I will discuss how business intelligence software will allow us to meet those strategic goals. We will establish what type of information and analysis capabilities will be available once this business intelligence software is implemented. We will discuss hardware and system software that will be required to run specific business intelligence software. Lastly, I will give a brief synopsis on three vendors (IBM, Microsoft Microsoft and Oracle) that are dominating the business information software
The theme of this book is how businesses in today’s world use ever-improving technology to collect data, convert it into information and business intelligence, and combine this information and intelligence with the knowledge of the workers to help make the best decisions they possibly can for the benefit of the company and the customers. Throughout the book, there are discussions on the different ways that technology can help a business with this process. When going into detail about the various information systems, this book also brings into
Kudler Fine Foods (KFF) is a specialty food company that is base in California and has stores located in Encinitas, Del Mar, and La Jolla, its main store. At the stores customers can purchase fine foods such as produce, meat, and other specialty items that they provide. Kudler Fine Foods is considered one of the best fine food stores around. However, Kudler is in serious need of a network infrastructure upgrade of their old one. With the introduction of technology advancements in data collection items such as; network access and increased speeds while still providing information protection; and company communication; are the primary goals of the enterprise network. This step is important because it will increase the income and will reduce the cost of operations within the KFF stores. Kudler Fine Foods will go back up to technological speed as the network upgrade is completed, while at the same time improving the way they keep track of inventory and sales by using data mining techniques, which will be collected and analyzed in real time.
Many of us shop for goods in grocery stores or department stores without considering the remarkable effort it takes to have all of those goods or services ready for consumption. There are many processes that must be observed for any business to run efficiently; such as: accounting, finance, marketing, production, human resources, and management. All of these processes require many trained individuals to make the grand machine that is business move in a direction that benefits clients and companies alike. In this paper I will examine the marketing business process of J C Penney’s as observed from experience while working there.
Considering the pace at which Mustang Music was growing, a tool was needed to reorganize its entire information system. A better method in the form of database technology appeared relevant than its current obsolete method of spreadsheet. Application of database system to Mustang Music could significantly improve its control system and as well simplify its information management system. Hence, such urgency ignited many reasons why Mustang Music needed a database to monitor its control and information system. Particularly for the following reasons, Mustang Music could capitalize on database system.
Kudler’s Fine Foods is a small to medium size business that specializes in gourmet foods throughout the San Diego Metropolitan Area. To operate the business efficiently, Kudler uses Retail Enterprise Management System (REMS) to implement the necessary operating for all of the business the Kudler conducts. Like many small to medium size organizations entering in the complicated world of business, they needed to hire a consulting firm to guide them for the appropriate Retail management system for their respective business use. This consulting firm, Smith Consulting, also was contracted annually to
First off, what is DSS? “A decision support system (DSS) is a computer program application that analyzes business data and presents it so that users can make business decisions more easily.” (Rouse, 2010, para. 1) “It is an "informational application" (to distinguish it from an "operational application" that collects the data in the course of normal business operation).” (Rouse, 2010, para. 1) This systems data collected is usually displayed in a graphical format on the dashboard. This may comprise an “expert system or artificial intelligence”. (Rouse, 2010, para. 2)
In order to gain information about the wants of the customers in each region, Macy should collect enough data from its Transaction Process System. The transaction process system will enable Macy’s to view what is being bought in each region. This enables for more accurate data to be implemented in the information systems. When data is collected form TPS, then management can collect the statistical data from the market and analyze them using analytical software applications, such as Hadoop. Another way that they can collect information for their information systems would be to create online campaign, a survey, whatever is available.
All retailers have a common goal in mind, and that is to make a profit. Companies earn a profit by first connecting customers with products, which can lead to an exchange of product for money. Without the ability to connect customers with products, no money exchange is possible and no profit is earned. It is, therefore, immensely important for retailers to have the right products, in the right quantities, at the right locations, and at the right time. Inventory Management Systems provide companies like L.L.Bean with the necessary information to achieve just that. L.L.Bean’s advanced inventory management system (IMS) connects customers with products, irrespective of the location of the product or the customer (Hoffsess, 2015).
Decision support systems are mainly used by the management, planning and operations departments in organizations. In my task, a DSS may not be necessary as the data may be minimal and easy to follow up. The data is required to basically track if all booth components and equipment are shipped to the trade show and back to the warehouse. My task is to ensure the booth components and equipment remains intact after every trade show.
Decision making refers to the process of finding and selecting options according to the priorities and values of the person making the decision. Since there are many choices involved, it is important to identify as many options as possible so as to pick the option that best fits a company’s target, goals, values and vision. Due to the integral role of decision making in company growth and financial progress, many firms such as Amazon.com and EBay are pumping in huge investments in business intelligence systems, which are made up of certain technological tools and technological applications that are created for the purpose of facilitating improved decision making process in
R.L Fielding (2008) reiterates that Business Intelligence is a thorough and holistic analysis of the company records, data, information, and software application for effective decision making. All decision making processes need an organized, readily-accessible, and human readable compilations of data. With the use of an effective tool the firm can easily figure out their own business processes, the behavior of their customers, and the economic trend of the industry. With these facts, the firm can arrive at a better strategy to achieve their specified goals with confidence.
Consumers have many choices when deciding where to purchase their goods. While retailer managers are deciding how to win the consumer’s business and increase revenue, they are also constantly trying to figure out ways to reduce costs. Technology helps retail managers improve areas of inventory and supply chain management as well as customer satisfaction and loss prevention (Green, 2002). This paper explains how technology
Group decision support systems (GDSS) are interactive, computer-based systems that facilitate solution of semi-structured and unstructured problems by a designated set of decision-makers working together as a group. A GDSS can assist groups, especially groups of managers, in analyzing problem situations and in performing group decision making tasks. GDSS include structured decision tools for tasks like brainstorming, commenting on ideas, and rating and ranking of alternatives
