Who is responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet in William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet? In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet and they fall in love. Both their families are at feud with each other causing it to be difficult for Juliet and Romeo to marry each other. This causes the play to end with the death of both Juliet and Romeo. Friar Laurence the priest was responsible for the death of Romeo and Juliet because he is acting selfishly. He does not keep his word when he said he will be there when Juliet wakes up. William Shakespeare does this through friar Laurence’s inconsiderate actions. When Juliet finds out she needs to marry Paris she immediately goes to Friar Laurence and pleads him for a way not to marry Paris because she loves Romeo. Friar Laurence then gives Juliet a vial which contains a poison that make one seem as if dead. Friar then promises Juliet that when she awakens from her death-like sleep Romeo and himself will be there to watch her wake up. “Shall Romeo by my letters know our drift, and hither shall he come; and he and I will watch thy wakening.” (Act 4 scene 1 pg. 148). This did not happen and when Juliet wakes up she does not see the Friar only Romeo. Because of one of Friar Laurence’s mistakes when Romeo found out Juliet is dead he takes a poison causing him to die in the arms of Juliet. William Shakespeare uses the actions of friar Laurence to cause the death of Romeo and Juliet. When Friar Laurence gave the poison he was not thinking of what could happen wrong making his actions inconsiderate.
