Jacob Le Marie was a Dutch explorer that circumnavigated the world. Jacob Le Marie found the strait that was in between Tierra del Fuego and Isla de Estados. It is now named the Le Marie Strait for him. His ship (The Eendracht) then rounded Cape Horn and when doing so, proved that Tierra del Fuego wasn’t a continent. He provide knowledge for others wanting to sail around Tierra del Fuego. He then died at sea right before Christmas in 1616.
Adriaen Block was a Dutch navigator and explorer. He explored some of present day New England, from New Jersey to Massachusetts. He had four voyages and ended up with an Island in Rhode Island named after him (Block Island). He was the first explorer to find out that Manhattan and Long Island are islands. Juan Ponce de Leon was born in Spain in 1460. Looking for fame and fortune, he started his career as an explorer by assisting in Christopher Columbus’s second expedition. Later on, he started his own expeditions to search for gold. On his various expeditions, he is known for building settlements in Puerto Rico and finding Florida while on the search for the fountain of youth.
In today’s world, we have many famous explorers that we study in text books. One person that is lesser known is Hernan Cortez. Hernan Cortez was born into a lesser noble family in the year of 1485. He was born by the name of Hernan Cortez Pizarror (aztec-history,com). Hernan was destined by his parents to become a lawyer. Setting his own path, Hernan Cortez became a conquistador instead at the age of nineteen. Denying his orders to not set sail, Hernan took eleven ships and more than five hundred men to the Mexican Coast (biography.com). Later becoming a ruler and a criminal, he died December 2, 1547.

De Soto lead a dangerous expedition in the interior of North America in the hope of finding gold. During his journey, he came among a over populated a sophisticated Indian civilization living in the Mississippi Valley. After discovering this place, De Soto, his men, and livestock introduced new diseases and destroyed that beautiful and large group of natives. Three years of searching and searching de Soto and his men grew restless, next thing they knew de Soto died with the men fleeing to Mexico.
