An unlikely promiscuous figure became the pinnacle of peace and equality. This figure is Malala Yousafzai, a driven girl from the valley of Swat in Pakistan, stood up against her peers and spoke out against an imposed custom on girls. Malala’s endeavours began with the introduction of the Taliban within Pakistan. Now ran by tyranny, Pakistan became a place of oppression, especially against the rights of females. Malala and her father, Ziauddin, were among the very sparse population of activists within Pakistan, advocating against the Taliban’s influence. I am Malala is a heroic story about a young woman who stood up for what she wanted. This auto-biography is based on a teenager named Malala Yousafzi who stood up for girls education in her home country Pakistan. She also went against the Taliban because she didn't think it was right of what they were doing to her innocent village. When Malala was born very few people came to congratulate her parents because the birth of a girl is seen as a failure of the parents in her culture. She was born and raised in Sway Valley, Northeastern Pakistan. Swat Valley has beautiful scenery which attracts a lot of tourism until the Taliban took over the valley. Malala’s parents Ziauddin and Toor Pekai were very kind humble people from the mountain villages. Malala’s father was a very well educated man who grew up studying poetry and literature. He also started the Khushal School a three years before Malala was born. ”My father started the school three years before I was born, and he was a teacher, accountant, and principal—as well as a janitor, handyman, and chief mechanic.” (Chapter 1, Page 20) In Malala’s culture, girls are refused an education or even simply knowing how to read and write. Her father helped girls by starting the school and making a big influence on girls. Malala is truly a hero throughout this paper you will see how she changed everything.
The autobiography I am Malala by Malala Yousafzai begins with the scene of young pakistani education and women’s rights activist Malala being shot in the head. Her school bus had been stopped by the Taliban who, after asking which of the girls was Malala, put a bullet into her head. Malala ends the powerful prologue with the words “Who is Malala? I am Malala and this is my story” (9). Malala then rewinds to the story of her birth and how in Pakistan, no one congratulated her parents when she was born because she was a girl. Pakistani culture pushes for the birth of a boy as an islamic majority country. However, her father saw the potential in his daughter as a great leaser and named her after one of the great female leaders in Pakistan-
Malala Yousafzai was a talented and brave young woman who had one goal in life: to get an education and encourage others to do the same. Born in Pakistan, Malala did not grow up with many resources, but she was lucky enough to have a father that shared the same goal as her. At the young age of fifteen, she was shot in the face by the Taliban for standing up for girls’ rights to an education. Although the recovery time was long and hard, the Taliban did not silence her as she continued her campaign. This eventually led her to opening her own school in Yemen and writing the novel I Am Malala. As someone who highly values education and bravery, her story made me interested in learning more about her culture, family, and experiences.
Malala Yousafzai’s home town in the Swat Valley of Pakistan is where her journey first takes place where oppression against womens education is enforced by Taliban rule. The Taliban staunchly opposed Malala’s fierce beliefs in the right for women to have an education and they did their best to silence her voice. Malala and the other women in the Swat Valley were forced to obey their oppressive regime and not gain an education. Despite the harsh climate against her Malala spoke up against this tyranny with the faith that she could cause a change for the better. Yousafzai uses ethos, pathos, and logos to connect with the readers, while using those, she also adds personal stories and images right from her home town. Those stories and pictures make this a strongly believable autobiography. Not only does she give her perspective on equal rights, she also gives her families and classmates.
For young women in Swat Valley, a district in the northwest frontier province of Mingora, Pakistan, having basic rights such as an education is an issue that has been fought for since its existence. Malala Yousafzai daughter of activist Ziauddin Yousafzai is one of many unfortunate young women who have felt the wrath and despair of the Pakistani Taliban regarding this issue.
Malala Yousafzai used an anecdote in her speech to relate her story with the audience. In the speech it says, “The terrorists thought that they would change our aims and stop our ambitions but nothing changed in my life except this: Weakness, fear and hopelessness died. Strength, power and courage was born.” This example gives the audience hope that they can take action and achieve gender equality rights by using their words and actions. The anecdote appeals to the audience’s emotions, by using specific word choice such as strength, power, and courage. This helps connect Malala’s view to the audience. “I remember that there was a boy in our school who was asked by a journalist, Why are the Taliban against education? He answered very simply. By pointing to his book he said, A Talib doesn’t know what is written inside this book. They think that God is a tiny, little conservative being who would send girls to hell just because of going to school. The terrorists are misusing the name of Islam and Pashtun society for their own personal beliefs.” This quote shows the audience why the terrorists do crimes and mass murders, and Malala Yousafzai is teaching her audience to be forgiving and use words and
Malala Yousafzai’s is a women’s activist for youth education, but primarily for girls. On July 12th, 2013, she delivered an address at the Youth Takeover of the United Nation. This speech is powerful, eye opening and deserves to be heard. She is addressing two audiences, one being the people that follow her same belief for education, some of those people would be at this convention and the other being the people that disagree with her purpose, like the Taliban. Yousafzai was in 1997, in Mingora, Pakistan, which used to be a popular tourist destination. As of now the region has been taken into control of the Taliban. Her father is also an anti- Taliban activist and educator. She, her father and tons of others just want thing to be like they used to. Where they had a safe neighborhood and didn't have to worry about violence. She delivered a speech riddled with excellent use of rhetoric to convey her argument. Malala’s whole purpose for her fight for education of the youth is so that it will stop future violence, She displays this purpose in her speech by using outward focus, compassion and personal experience to her audiences.
Each culture has expectations and traditions that each person is expected to follow, those who do not conform are branded as outcasts. These expectations are exhausting and cause inner conflict within society. The novel, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Díaz, is about the pressure of adhering to the unwritten rules of cultural expectations. The novel’s themes can be compared to the lives of women in the the Middle-East and their push for equality. The documentary, He Named Me Malala by David Guggenheim, follows the story of Malala Yousafzai and her push for women’s education in Pakistan, and the suppression of the Taliban. Guggenheim’s documentary highlights Malala’s trouble with changing her culture's expectations for women and the sadness in wake of that issue. The TED Talks from Alaa Murabit, What My Religion Really Says About Women, explains her experience with loss of innocence when she moved from Canada to Libya. An article from The Guardian, Majority of men in the Middle East survey believe a woman's place is at home, exposes the truth of men’s expectations of women in the Middle East and the women’s ambition to achieve more. The constructs and rules enforced by the culture that engulfs a person causes oppression and damage to their mental health.
In contrast, Malala’s attempt to create social change was far more dangerous. Malala and many other girls in Pakistan are denied the right to education when the Taliban seize power in the Swat Valley, Pakistan. Malala’s struggle takes place in contemporary Pakistan where speaking out is considered very dangerous. The memoir revels the destruction of Pakistan founder, Ali Jinnah’s original vision of a ‘land of tolerance’ by increasing Islamisation; two military dictatorships ; corrupt politicians, poverty, illiteracy and the rise of the ‘forces of militancy and extremism’ exemplified by the Taliban, who was led by Maulana Fazlullah and the imposition of terror and fear under the guise of sharia law. The repression of individual freedom made people fearful to speak out. The Taliban had banned women from going ‘outside without a male relative to accompany (them)’ and told people ‘stop listening to music, watching movies and dancing’. The Taliban had ‘blown up 400 schools’ and had held public whippings demonstrated the consequences of disobedience, as did the execution of ‘infidels’ like young dancer, Shabana, whose body was dumped in the public square. Both texts, however more so Malala than Rita reveal that speaking out in a volatile and dangerous political environment does involve more risks, but is essential for change to occur.
The story I have analyzed is`Standing with Malala: Meet the Teenagers Who Survived the Taliban and Kept Going to School’ from Yes! Magazine. The story follows up on the Taliban shooting at Malala in Pakistan for raising her voice to oppose the closing of schools and colleges in Pakistan and fighting for women’s educational rights. It interviews Shazia Ramzan, and Kainat Riaz who were also shot in the bus in October 2012. After three years they are more committed to education than ever and are working with the Malala fund to advocate for girls’ education. The core message of the story was to let people know how their experience has led them to stand up for other girls-not just in Pakistan, but everywhere and to make girls reading, how they can
On July 12, 2013, 16-year-old Malala Yousafzai, delivered her first public speech, to the United Nations Youth Takeover, where she persuasively articulated her aspiration to reach out to young, adolescent advocates the deficient nature of education, specifically in regards to women and young children. During Yousafzai’s advocacy for children’s right to education, her spoken ambition was to reach a global audience in hopes of bringing awareness to a troublesome issue. Likewise, throughout the speech, Yousafzai effectively expressed her gratitude to the people who have made an influence in her life, including the champions of the world Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, and Muhammad Ali Jinnah as well as the countless teachers she had who motivated her to persist in further educating herself. Nevertheless, she also commendably reveals through her Nobel Peace Prize Speech that the award is not only for herself, but, consequently, for those “disregarded” children who continually yearn for education on a daily basis. This successfully demonstrates that she is not above those children, but, instead, stands with them. In several illustrations, she conveys the notion that she is not going to stand idly by and witness young girls being denied their rightful education. Accordingly, Yousafzai deliberates, it is moral and upright to fight for what one believes in.
If you were shot for standing up for women and children's’ rights, would you continue your crusade for their rights or back down out of fear? Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head by Taliban gunmen while standing up for educational rights for girls. Many people, men and women alike would take this as a sign to back down. Instead, despite almost dying, Malala continued to be an outspoken and prominent champion for education amongst young women. While the easy choice would have been for Malala to remain quiet and not put herself in danger Malala continued risking her life to make a change in hers’ and other women’s rights. She became the voice for millions of young women that did not have the courage to take a stand for their own rights, which is evident in everything that she discussed in her Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech. Malala’s speech achieves its rhetorical purpose by showing very powerful appeals to pathos, ethos, and logos, through use of literary devices.
