This lifestyle showcases many beliefs of transcendentalism, many that are still abundantly present in society today. Transcendentalism is shown in the way people live and in the television shows like “The Boonies”. In “The Boonies”, transcendentalism appears in the ideas of Idealism/Individualism and in Nature.

Throughout history, people encounter a stage in their lives where they feel the necessity to assert their independence and challenge their abilities and self-worth. In the book, Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, the author shares his understanding and kinship with the main character, Chris McCandless, a young man who thrusts himself into a life of solitude and a harsh environment during his search for meaning to his life. Krakauer depicts himself and McCandless as modern day transcendentalists with an abundance of competency, resourcefulness and skills as naturalists. Although McCandless chose to experience a life of solitude and face the hazards that nature presents, his lack of preparedness prevented him from completing his endeavor successfully.

A transcendentalist is a person who believes that the most important reality is what is sensed or what is intuitive, rather than what is thought such as scientific knowledge. And from the information we have gathered from the book Into the Wild, McCandless truly is one. Sometimes in life you got have to do what your mind tells you, and follow whatever makes you happy, walk on the path that you want to be on. Chris McCandless is an interesting guy throughout this movie He starts out as a normal guy, he is a college graduate and was confidante he would get into harvard. In one of the very first scenes, Chris went out to a celebratory dinner with his family. When his parents brought up buying him a new car, nevertheless Chris’s was a junkie. At the moment of them saying this, almost seemed as it sparked or flipped a switch in Chris's brain. He did not want anything from them, Chris turned even more to a transcendentalist than before. Chris almost seems too crazy, even though he was not. Chris basically said he did not want anything from anybody. Which leads me to my point. Most will say that Chris did not follow the transcendentalists, but in other beliefs most do think he did because of his acts of being solo and alone.

"I Believe I Can Fly" by R Kelly portrays transcendentalist ideas because it reflects individualism. Transcendentalists believe that people should be completely free and break away from society. They also believe that people should have their own ideas that originate from themselves and only them. All in all, transcendentalists believe that people should follow their own path and R Kelly does exactly this. Throughout the song, Kelly talks about being free. He also never uses the word "we" or "they." Everything is all about himself and nobody else.

In the song “Isle of Flightless Birds” by Twenty One Pilots they sing about either walking through life with no purpose or choosing to do what you believe in and what you like. It tells us that we can either go through life doing what is planned for us, or choosing our own path and completing tasks that make you happy. The artists are saying not to be afraid of going outside the box and doing things that you enjoy. In other words the song is saying that if you do things you enjoy “life will set you free”. The song is also saying how if you don’t do what you believe in then you will act like “flightless birds”.

Transcendentalism was a collection of new ideas about literature, religion, and philosophy. It began as a squabble in the Unitarian church when intellectuals began questioning and reacting against many of the church’s orthodoxy ways regarding all of the aforementioned subjects: religion, culture, literature, social reform, and philosophy.
