First, Rather than focusing on the child's learning deficiencies, emphasize and reward the child’s strengths and encourage them to find new interest and hobbies. Second it is important to meet with the child's teachers, tutors, and school support personnel to understand performance levels, and attitude toward school. After the student has been evaluated they are now eligible for special education services. Special education services are provided to student to work with a team of professionals, including your child's teacher, to develop an Individualized Education Program. The individualized education program is created to provide a summary of child’s current education and future goals within education. Children with learning disabilities need to know that they are loved and that they are not dumb. They need to know that they are intelligent normal people who just have trouble learning because their mind process words and information differently. There are many different reasons that students may need additional assistance to be successful academically. Students may have a difficulty reading, or English may not be their primary language. They may have suffered a traumatic brain injury or may have been born with Autism. We need to adjust the classroom with hands on materials that are in reach for the child and fit their specific developmental aspects. Most importantly, we need to make sure they are included in the classroom and treated like the other students. This will help them social, emotionally, and physically. By having children with special needs in the classroom with those of general education, this allows the teacher to get training on ways to teach to all of the children and help them feel like one. Instead of pushing children with special needs off and into another classroom, it is important to keep them with the other children and allow them to grow and learn along with others. After a student is identified with a disability, special education is provided. Special education is individulaized to meet the needs the student. It is fundamentally important that the plan is individualized, that is why educators, parents, and professionals develop an IEP for each student. To ensure that the student has a plan that will most benefit them, each IEP has eight components. The IDEA has six principles which are: zero-reject, nondiscriminatory evaluation, appropriate education, least restrictive environment, parent and student participation, and procedural due process.
The United States has a very consistent process in which students are identified as qualifying for special education services. It starts with a parental consent to an assessment plan. Within 60 days of being given parental permission, assessments are completed and an Individualized Educational Program (IEP) meeting is held. During this meeting the results are presented to the IEP team. An IEP team consists of parent(s), an administrator, school psychologist, special education teacher, general education teacher, school nurse, and other services providers as needed. After all of the assessment reports are presented the team decides whether the child has a disability and if he or she qualifies for special education services.

The school systems have programs to help those children have an easier time in school. Programs like RTI “ Response to Intervention (RTI) is a multi-tier approach to the early identification and support of students with learning and behavior needs.” RTI is designed to make a individual special education plans for students.
Children with learning disabilities are a population who are inherently at risk. They are at risk of not being able to utilize the presented curriculum, as their non-disabled peers do. They are also at risk of suffering from emotional stress and or low self-efficacy as they negotiate classrooms assignments and expectations. Our Exceptional Children text states that children with learning disabilities, “… often struggle with reasoning, attention, memory, selecting and focusing on relevant stimuli and the perception and processing of visual or auditory stimuli (p162 Heward)”. It also says that “Seventy-Five percent of children with learning disabilities exhibit deficits in social skills… and have a higher incidence of behavioral problems (p.169 Heward).” The effects of one or multiple deficits, of those stated above, have the potential to steer, even a willing child, away from academic and or social success.
To receive any type of health care service, children with special needs undergo a similar process (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2017). The individual’s needs should be identified by a healthcare professional, the core training or treatment must be identified, medical records must be maintained, a written health transition plan for the child and family must be kept up to date, and the family of the child must be ensured affordable health insurance. For ages five to twelve, the child will receive services with the Committee on Special Education (CSE). Also, an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) will be made, which provides free and proper education to all students with a disability (Owens, 2016). For WS specifically, Gordon (2006) also mentions that when planning remedial teaching it is essential to carry out detailed tests of development and intelligence to periodically assess the progress made by the child.
