Roald Dahl, British novelist and short story writer, offers quite a twisted tale in “Lamb to the Slaughter.” Dahl not only reveals the nature of human beings, but also the case of mistaken identity. He also successfully makes this connection by using everyday problems, such as marriage. Dahl shows the transformation of the character Mary Maloney who shifts from a pregnant housewife to a quick thinking killer who leaves no stone untouched. Mary Maloney is first portrayed as an average housewife who pleases her husband in any way possible. Within a few minutes of tragic news, she has a complete transformation and even manages to fool herself amongst others. It starts off as a normal afternoon as Mary Maloney waits for her husband. Mary Maloney suddenly changes from a loving housewife into a “Neanderthal” swinging the leg of the lamb as it were a caveman’s club (Bertonneau). It is ironic how the meal becomes the weapon of choice for the gruesome murder. What tickles my mind is that the leg of lamb is frozen and Mrs. Mary Maloney intends to use it for supper; usually frozen meat take a couple hours to heat up rather than the lamb chops she originally thinks about in the beginning. Elizabeth Piedmont-Marton, British Children’s writer, argues that it is not clear why Mary Maloney “grasps it like a weapon rather than a piece of food” in the first place (Piedmont-Marton). The reader is left wondering on Mary’s mental state of mind and her true nature. There seems to be a secret killer in Mary that is no longer kept hidden. After coming to a realization of what she has done, Mary Maloney begins to conjure a solid alibi. Of course, being the wife of a police detective she knew the punishment for murder.
