Marriage is very common among societies. Depending on the culture, the definition and the type of marriages differ. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, “Marriage is a physical, legal and moral union between man and woman in complete community life for the establishment of a family(2013).”A broader definition of marriage is that it’s ritually and socially recognized union between people who establishes rights and obligations between them.

Marriage is described as two people as partners in a personal relationship. There are two typical ideas of marriage that we know today. The first one that comes to mind is the one we all know, based on love, but there is another one that some may not even know of and its arranged marriages. Arranged marriage is not typically in our culture we know but in different cultures arranged marriages are their normal marriage. Throughout this essay, I will discuss the importance of realizing cultural diversity and how we apply the perspectives we gain from cross-cultural comparison to our own experience using central concepts about marriage to compare and contrast marriage in several cultures.

Union in marriage has existed in our society for ages and is not a recent concept. It is also referred to as matrimony; it is a publicly recognized union throughout the society between two different persons. In fact, you and I are here because your parents and my parents decided to get married to each other and bear children. Marriage is a form of correlation that involves mutual duties and rights where individuals are communally or socially consented to and initiate a family. Thus, marriage is a worldwide accepted and recognized social institution. There are different types of matrimonies that are practiced in different parts of the world. Each and every society has a different belief about marriage practices and the social recognition of the union. However, in our contemporary society, there are new forms of marriage unions cropping up, which may seem weird to some people, especially the religious and conservative members of the society. They are contrary to the initial idea of the marriage institution and surpass our knowledge. Important to note is that they are legitimate in some states, and hence, those practicing them do so with complete liberty and freedom. We are exploring the main forms of marriage. We will put the theme of marriage in the context of the other readings. Finally, we will include a further study on the theme of marriage while reflecting on the character and religious reasons behind them.

In history the marriage contract or agreement has been guided by moral, social and religious ideals. Today, the local, state and federal governments play a role in marriage, but not in a way of promoting marriage. Marriage is an essential contract between a husband and a wife. In the past, marriages were arranged between relatives and the parents of the couple were the main leads in discussing the ceremony.

“Americans do not seem to be interested in a reality check on the topics of love and marriage. After all, it seems to be more fun to believe in fairy tales” (Hornblow). There is a large number of Americans who would get married at least once in their lives, without thinking of the importance of a marriage and the possibilities that could happen based on quick decisions. The true meaning to what marriage is, issues involving marriage, which causes the divorce rate to rise in the United States, and the importance of marriage, to what is being done to increase the chance of a happy long-lasting marriage. Marriages in the United States can be seen by the explanation of the effects of not being able to tackle problems, or being able to learn how to work through complex issues of everyday life as a married couple.

Tina Turner once sang, “What’s love got to do with it?” Within the song, Turner’s answer to this question is to focus only on her feelings of attraction, thus rejecting any romantic feelings. The same question can be posed to the concept of marriage. Marriage might seem easily definable: a legal union of two people. However, the motivations behind marriage differ across cultures. In America marriage is often linked with the idea of love. However, the idea of marriage as a bond of love is specific to Western culture. Additionally, marrying for love is a fairly new idea. Marriage is defined as the stable union between two people that live together and are sexually involved and procreative with each other (Vaughn 2010). Being raised in a Hispanic and American culture, I’ve learned that this is what marriage is. As a culture, we place more emphasis on marriage for love while other cultures such as India place less emphasis on marriage for love.

This book comes in two main parts. The second part contains twenty-seven songs dedicated to the deities Dumuzi, Inanna, and their relationship as lovers. They include prayers, declarations of love for each other, how they met, as well as mentions of other deities from the Mesopotamian pantheon. The first part provides context to these songs, methods of classification, their underlying theme of the “Sacred Marriage”, and critical literary and linguistic analyses. The primary sources in this book directly relate to my thesis, and can be used along with the other primary sources I have. There are many theories for the universal institution of marriage. It solves a few problems between men and women, but these problems cannot be considered the prime motivation for marriage as an institution. Some of these problems include sharing the products of gendered labor, caring for extremely dependent offspring, and minimizing sexual competition.

The legal establishment of two individuals creating vows to commit to each other defines what marriage is, it may just be more than just the paperwork and the ceremonies; but two people having a mindset and a lifestyle with another person in their interest. It could be affection, or it could be expectation like it was centuries ago. Either way, a relationship between a man and a woman creating vows and committing to each other begin and end with specific expectations, a lifestyle change, and somebodies “perfect image” of that special someone. Today, being married means a lot to live up too; loyalty, dependability, cooperation, and a joined effort especially within the household. Lifestyles may change whether it’s the man or the wife and it can depend on who has the money, the job, and the ability to survive. Meaning one or the other have to be willing to live differently for their special someone. Also most of the time, usually by the man, a person is imagined in their heads the “perfect person” who they are married too..

In the human society, marriage is the most essential social custom. Marriage appears as a compromise between two committed individuals, also known as spouses. It is a way of creating a family and obligations. Weddings are traditional ceremonies with exchange of wedding vows and rings, which symbolize eternity and love, between the bride (woman) and the groom (man). It is practiced in many modern countries and has similar meanings as marriage. Marriage is a social bond, which requires care and understandings between the two people. As long as spouses develop together while retaining their individuality, marriage will not be a social trap.

The definition of marriage in the English oxford dictionary is “The legally or formally recognized union of two people as partners in a personal relationship (historically and in some jurisdictions specifically a union between a man and a woman)”. Marriage can be described as a partnership between a male and a female, in which an intimate union is created. It is an order from god, where people can reproduce to create families. The need to get married comes from natural instincts for humans, as marriage is a sacred union created by god. For the marriage to be valid and legal, a marriage contract is made by the spouses. A marriage has to be based on free consent of the spouses, and with such consent and the marriage contract, the spouses can create a special bond between them. This bond is meant to last forever. But unfortunately, 28 million individuals have sought divorce in Egypt, during 2015 alone; the equivalent of 14 million divorce cases or quarter of the population. In the upcoming pages, I’m seeking to further understand the reasons behind the increasing divorce rates in Egypt.

Today, the idea of marriage conjures images of bashful brides beautifully draped in all white, of grandiose flower arrangements climbing towards the ceiling, of romance personified. As an institution in this modern world, marriage represents the apex of romantic love, with an entire industry of magazines, movies, and television shows devoted to perpetuating marriage as an idealized symbol of the ultimate love between two people. Contrarily, as a sociological institution, marriage comes from much more clinical and impersonal origins, contrasting with the passion surrounding modern understandings of the institution. Notably, french anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss theorizes that the institution of marriage emerged from a need to form alliances between groups, with women functioning as the property exchanged so that such alliances could be solidified (Levi-Strauss).
