Michael Jordan American Icon Michael Jeffrey Jordan was born February 17, 1963 in Brooklyn, New York. His family moved to Wilmington, North Carolina, where he attended Emsley A. Laney High School. Wail there he played baseball, football, and basketball, he even tried out for the varsity basketball team his sophomore year. But only at 5’11” he was deemed too short to play for the varsity team. To show how good he was, he became the star of Laney 's junior varsity squad. He even had several 40-point games. During the summer he grew four inches and trained vigorously. Jordan left North Carolina in 1984, one year before his graduation to enter the 1984 NBA Draft. Jordan with the third overall pick with the Chicago Bulls picking him, one reason why Jordan wasn’t drafted sooner was because the first two teams were in need of a center. He returned to North Caroline to complete his degree in 1986. During his first season in the NBA, Jordan averaged 28.2 points per game, and 51.5% shooting, he quickly became a fan favorite even with opposing teams. Also he appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated with the heading "A Star Is Born" just a month into his professional career. He was also voted as an All-Star starter by the fans his rookie season. There was some controversy before the All-Star game when several veteran players were mad, because all the attention Jordan was getting, this led to a freeze-out on Jordan. Players refused to pass him the ball throughout the game, this left Jordan unaffected when he returned to the regular season. Jordan was voted Rookie of the Year. The Bulls finished the season 38–44, but lost in the first round of the playoffs against Milwaukee Bucks’. Jordan’s second season stopped because a broken foot in the third game, which caused him to miss 64 games. Even though Jordan 's injury, and a 30–52 record.
