As any artist does in their work of art, in order to become a great writer you must be completely devoted to what you are creating. Sentences must flow as if brush strokes, words must compile to create cohesive, clear, and complex thoughts as if colors. Writing is just as much of an art as painting, sculpting, or drama. Just like in writing, every artist has a particular style- the way the artist uses his brush, colors, canvas, tools- In writing a style can be shown by the writers distinct use of different sentence structures, certain types of vocabulary, or other things that distinguish one writer from another. For me, a great part of my style in writing was developed from a sense of humor and inspiration to acquire knowledge from vocabulary. …show more content…
I turned to my friend, a bawcock (Word of the day meaning: “a fine fellow”), and he said to me “That’s none other than that former governor lady Sarah Palin.” We then ran away from the crazy women as if gazelles galloping through the Serengeti.” Or “She threw a glass cup filled with Dr Pepper at me because I would never raise my voice when we would get into arguments; Instead I would stay calm and try to resolve the issue. But this time I screamed “You’re a psychopath!” and left the house.” Although the sentences were absurd, for me comical references were the perfect tool for memorization. The Sarah Palin sentence was obviously not true, but the sentence with the Dr Pepper was. Actually, my ex-girlfriend (the girl in the sentence), was in my class and knew exactly what I was alluding to in my sentence. With All jokes aside, this “words of the day” assignment was the perfect segway into enhancing my vocabulary and set forth a path that would increase the quality of my serious writing in my College English class my senior …show more content…
Ever since I found an interest in vocabulary from the comedic creativity within my “words of the day” notebook, I have been eager to learn. My teacher noticed that I had been using the words he had given us and other words I had found myself in my writing. He noticed that my writing had improved and I had taken a sense of gravity for learning. One day he said to me “You know Jon, I don’t know what you took between now and last year but I want some”. He said this because my writing improved at a monumental proportion. He then cordially referred to me as a lexophile to the class. I had no idea what a “lexophile” besides knowing that it was the lover of something; Not knowing, I did what I normally would do, I did my research. ‘Lexo-” in latin is referred to as “reading” or “words” and “Phile” is known as “the lover of”. So a lexophile is someone who loves words. Now knowing this, I could see that that my reading and writing had truly improved. Later on throughout the year we drifted away from deep introspective thoughts to technical research papers. After the first research paper I completed my teacher told me that I needed to adjust and notice what kind of writing I was doing. In my research paper I was using too much description and going about information in a roundabout way. Adjusting from descriptive and deep thoughts to
Like transforming from a caterpillar to a butterfly, my writing style transformed from something mediocre to something quite exceptional. In high school, even when I took advanced placement English and Literature courses, I was never good at writing. My writing would lack structure, reasoning, syntax, and a well-defined thesis statement. My inadequate grades on writing assignments lowered my self-esteem, so I assumed I would never enjoy writing papers because I believed I could never improve. However, since attending a university my writing style has improved far beyond my expectation. My EN 101 course enhanced my understanding of the different ways I could approach my writing. Also, it enhanced my comprehension of outlines to complete assignments. Investing quality time into my writing made a substantial difference because I became a stronger writer. Through the late nights, constant revisions, and agonizing head traumas, I learned that my writing is truly spectacular whenever I incorporate well-defined thesis statements, provide sufficient supporting evidence, and maintain a clear focus in my assignments.
Writing was never a known weakness of mine. However, I could never confidently call it a strength. Throughout the course of this semester, my writing style has evolved and I have rid my writing of many habitual mistakes. I have learned to appreciate writing much more, and enjoy the moments where my mind meets words on a paper. Creativity has always been one of my strong suits, but through this course I catered my creativity to compose a variety of essays and speeches. Likewise, public speaking is something that I did not struggle with in the past, yet the structure of the class required a video speeches which was fairly new to me. All in all, I have been able to identify and modify gaps in my composition of writing and speech as a result of this course.
Whenever I get a writing assignment for class, it seems like a chore. I don’t have a problem with writing, but papers always seem to take more time than they should. Maybe this is due to poor planning on my part, but essays are usually an ordeal, and I dread actually doing the work to finish one. The task is simple enough, but putting it off always seems like a better alternative to writing. I do think about the paper that I have to write, but I do not put thoughts and ideas into a paper or outline until I absolutely need to do so. From the moment I am given an assignment sheet, I begin brainstorming about the paper. I may not use any of these ideas, but I think of them. I also have a tendency to forget good ideas, which leads me to think
Throughout this class I have learn many different writing styles. We used APA form of writing to type our paper and essay. I have also learned that it’s good to take your time and spend more time thinking about what to write, other than just righting a paper right off back. I have learned that it’s not a good idea to write a paper on the day it’s done, that’s more like a ruff daft. My teacher have helped me understand different point of writing. Which all writing deal with an ethos, pathos and logos, either one or all of them will run through anything that tell you anything in writing. From what emotion are there to who have the rights to speak at the moment to what are the facts to agree with this person. As a class we have read articles, bio from many people to understand that it’s more then what the person is writing. Reading between lines and analyzing a part of the story can tell you more then what the writer is saying. Working together to understand something and work better than being alone thinking about a situation you can’t understand.
Throughout all four years of high school, the “meaning” of a race and all its components were described to me in great detail. My coach found that a three mile cross country race could apply to almost anything. He would analyze races by separating each mile. The first mile is run with one’s legs, the second with their brain, and the third with their heart. I never fully understood how the versatility of the science of a race. Immediately when thinking about how to explain my writing process and how I could reflect on this past semester while also encompassing the theme of love, the three mile cross country race that had been engrained in my brain came to mind.
This semester has been an eye opener to me about how I formulate ideas and outlines to my papers and visual works. My writing style and skills have gone through many changes throughout English 150 but by far there have been three areas where I have seen the most improvement. How I compose and formulate my works, using certain resources and how I integrated them into my paper, how I edit those works, and how well I use the advice and guidance from my peers to help me revise or complete my works.
A lot of things happen in humans’ life, ups and downs, rights and wrongs, choices that can be optional and unavoidable choices. Among those choices, I chose to be here at University of Arizona, studying Electrical and Computer Engineering. As the requirement to be student here, I took English 107 class in semester of spring 2017. Being international student in a foreign country is not easy. At the first time I came at UA and the first general education class I took required me to write 10 page research paper, in APA format. I ended up writing 3 10 pages essay in order to pass the class. At that time I was taking English 106 class, but I wasn’t that much ready to write 10 page research paper. Now, after taking English 107 class,
I notice one of the disadvantages with read/write style is not being able to learn due to limited or lack of instruction in visual if there no access to writing materials. An advantage of this style makes a person more self-dependent because of the note taking the process which equal self taught.
2. Let others revise and read your work, apply what they tell you and review it carefully (King).
When I was younger, I used to really enjoy writing. For me, writing was an escape from the harsh reality of being an adolescent teenager. I would relinquish feelings that I wasn’t capable to express with people by utilizing my writing. So my creative writing style would have to be dramatic, because I would write about the many obstacles I have overcome and how I managed to overcome them. Although I primarily wrote to express my feelings, I also enjoyed writing fictional stories. Through writing fictional stories I was capable to let my imagination run amok. Nevertheless, writing dramatic stories to express my feelings, writing fictional stories was a different kind of escape for me. I get to be innovative through my writing and there are zero
I felt rather confident with my first draft until I read your comments and reread it myself to see that there were so many things that could be altered. One significant revision was in the intro paragraph where I had to rephrase quite a few sentences as well as making sure that paragraphing was clear. I made sure to make these changes noticeable to the reader by allowing the sentences to offer more substance to the reader. In the body, I mainly added multiple sentences here and there in order to give evidence or to help in clarifying a point that was being addressed. I also added more specifics to the advice aspect that I intended to give the reader, however, I let it remain kind of ambiguous as I want to get the reader to think for themselves a bit, in regards to how they take the information I offered to find a solution in response to the liberal and the conservative opinions. Concluding the letter, I also added more sentences to offer the reader more insight to the importance of the points being expressed. I added in vague solutions, in an attempt to give the reader room to come up with their own final solutions.
There are many writing styles that many people pick up as they go through there many years of schooling. Each person picks up the same type of writing styles but as years go by people seem to pick up there own little types of writing style that separates them from everyone else. As I have gone through many years of English classes I have acquired more and more skills and many more are sure to come as I continue my education. My writing skills have only gotten better from the time of ninth grade English class until today. Since my days back in junior high school I was only taught the basic skills to write papers and since then they have grown to make me a decent writer. I have many strengths and also
Craft In writing 1, I obtained different techniques of crafting for my own story and organize in the right way for me and the readers to see. As for the PLO, craft was described as, “A language that reveals aesthetic awareness from writing.” Writing has always been one of my weakest subjects me since I find it difficult to start a writing assignment and I also struggle having some ideas so I should begin writing. Over the course of this semester, I have learned ways to improve my writing structure. When doing my weekly journals, I enjoyed how I get to share my opinions on weekly reading assignments. During the first week of journal (Weekly Journal #1), I get to express my perspective of a sanctuary place after reading an article called, “The Sanctuary of School” by Lynda Barry. Another weekly journal I enjoyed writing was my experience with racial tension in public place. It was during our third week (Weekly
An author’s writing style helps to highlight the details and emotions that are intended for the reader. This is the reason for the various styles of writing found in our society today. The drastic differences in style and focus points becomes quite apparent when comparing two pieces of literature written in differing styles. These stylistic differences may include the authors word choice , attention to finite details, and the perspective the literature is told from. My style of writing on the Canadian Prairie is directed towards an ‘all-seeing’ social realism perspective which uses elaborate, detailed descriptions of scenery; as opposed to “The Blue Kimono” where Callaghan writes in a very concise dialogue heavy form concentrated on the rapid progression of the plot in a modern realism form.
In addition to poetry and writing I do on my own time, I write very often for school. I typically receive high grades on my work because of the supposed skill or talent that I may have. This skill, however, only goes so far. The time I have spent editing, re-reading, editing again, and double checking each individual word borders on obsessiveness, but it is the only way I can improve as a writer. And, as any individual who spends much of their time practicing a skill, difficulties and obstacles become a common sight as time goes on. My biggest difficulty throughout my writing career has been style.
