Texas Children's Personal Statement: My Goals As A Nurse

Nursing is a practice in which nurses promote health and the well-being of patients. I believe that nursing is not only a job that prevents and cures illness, but has a deeper meaning and understanding. Becoming a nurse gives the opportunity to maximize and promote patients’ well-being. It is a way to learn and understand new perspectives and expand prior knowledge, to build relationships with patients, community, and other nurses, in addition to learning how to empathize and realize the patient’s needs, and to value and see people as human beings. I think even with the list given is not enough to define or explain a nurse. I believe being a nurse is a diverse and immeasurable experience, and what happens in this field is unknowing and uncertain. My goal in nursing practices is to take in life experiences and use the skills and ideas learned to shape me to become a better nurse and a better person.

“When you’re a nurse you know that everyday you will touch a life or a life will touch yours” ("Home"). Pursuing nursing, specifically Registered Nursing (RN) was never a question, I have always known that is what I would become. Registered Nurses work for patient care, and explains and teaches patients about their health care needs. Nursing has been in my family now for three generations and I am here to carry out the legacy. It is important to understand the education and training requirements, skills and talents needed, salary benefits offered, and the duties when committing to this career.

Nursing is a profession within the health care field that focuses care on not only individual patients, but also their family and community too. As a nurse, our goal is to attain, maintain, or recover patients to optimal health and quality of life holistically. Nurses also differentiate themselves in from other health care providers because of how they approach their patient care, training, and scope of practice. These are just a few of the reasons that I have decided to make nursing my major. There are many different specialisms with differing levels of authority and responsibility that are available with a nursing major, many of which can be obtained with a two-year degree.

It is important to understand that nursing is not only about helping the sick but it is also about helping the healthy individual. A nurse can do that by preventing any illness, which he or she can do by educating the population. It takes a special person to be a nurse, but it is a very rewarding career. It is a great feeling to know that you made a difference in the patient or even the patient’s family member’s lives. By receiving a master’s degree the nurse is able to give the patient more current and quality care. The patient’s family trusts you with the loved one’s life, it is a humbling experience, but it can also be nerve-racking.

A nurse should have a life long education to gain current knowledge of the best practice. Having the education will help you to efficiently and effectively give care. I want my patients to be educated, but I also want to learn from them. Nursing comes down to caring, for your patients and yourself. I always want to be the healthcare person that the patient feels most comfortable with. Nursing is a career that has so many emotions tied in it; your day can go from good to bad, or vice versa, within the hour. It is also a career that is very respected and honorable to do. As in every job it has its cons, but to know every shift that you have helped someone or changed their life for the better, is something that most people cannot say. Nursing is a unique profession. This profession requires a specific type of person. This person must be intelligent, caring, selfless, strong, sincere, and empathetic, among other characteristics. Nursing turns into a way of life for people whose profession it is. A nurses main job is to be a patient advocate. All of the education and skills that nurses go through is all to provide the best care in relation to what is best for the patient. Being a successful registered nurse definitely comes with many more titles than just ‘nurse’. From the education aspect of nursing, nurses know how to care for sick patients, promote health in patients and provide treatment for patients. To be a successful nurse that is a great start, but nurses possess many more characteristics that enable them to excel in their field. As a pre-nursing student, I should be thinking about all of the unmentioned obligations that come along with being a nurse. Mental and emotional abilities have proven to be just as necessary as the knowledge it takes to become a registered nurse. Learning the characteristics that a successful nurse possesses will assist me in becoming the best nurse that I can be.

The student nurse has a personal definition of nursing as collaboratively caring of all individuals in a holistic manner, focusing on the prevention of illness and injury, diagnosis of symptoms, treatment of condition, and promotion of health and wellness. Nursing from a practical stance can be defined as the act of assessing a patient, diagnosis of the patient, providing patient outcomes, identification of a treatment plan, implementation of a plan, and evaluation of the plan. Anyone with a set of skills can practice the act of nursing, but it takes a special person to actually be a nurse. A nurse should be invested in the patient, be an advocate for the patient, and above all be caring towards the patient. A patient will surely not remember which nurse gave the best shot, but they will remember which nurse was the most caring. Nursing is more than administering medications and performing skills, but rather it is an art of knowledge and critical thinking combined with compassion and care.

One of my primary goals in life is to inspire someone to keep trying, not to give and to not lose faith.
