A little over a year ago I graduated from a small Catholic college in Massachusetts. I have been a registered nurse for just over a year. I am currently in my last month of a new graduate nurse residency program at the hospital I work at. I work in the emergency room, which I absolutely love. Before I became a nurse, I was an emergency room technician for about three and a half years, as I was going through nursing school. Having this position helped me tremendously through nursing school. I was able to apply what we were learning in class to something I had seen at work. I wanted to go to get my master’s degree because I want to be either an adjunct clinical facility or a teacher later on in my career. I decided that this is a good time …show more content…
It is important to understand that nursing is not only about helping the sick but it is also about helping the healthy individual. A nurse can do that by preventing any illness, which he or she can do by educating the population. It takes a special person to be a nurse, but it is a very rewarding career. It is a great feeling to know that you made a difference in the patient or even the patient’s family member’s lives. By receiving a master’s degree the nurse is able to give the patient more current and quality care. The patient’s family trusts you with the loved one’s life, it is a humbling experience, but it can also be nerve-racking. Important It is important to me that I am giving my patient the quality care that he or she deserves. The patient’s safety is any nurse’s number one priority. Patient safety is “the reduction of risk of unnecessary harm” (E. Lima de Fernando et al., 2016, p. 895). One way to make sure that the patient is receiving quality care while keeping the patient’s safety in mind is through interprofessional collaboration. An example of this is when giving a patient a medication. It is important that the nurse checks the medication that is ordered by the physician. If the medication is one that has to come from the pharmacy, they also will check the order and make sure it makes sense. If the medication comes from the pharmacy, the nurse has to double check the medication when he or she receives it.
Becoming a nurse means to truly understand, embrace, and acquire the characteristics of an educator, an advocate, a comforter, a therapist, a listener and most importantly a care giver. My goal as an undergraduate nurse is to acquire these characteristics and master them so that I can care for any patient regardless
Nursing is a noble profession that will help me expand my horizon by letting me focus outside of myself and my self-interest. By focusing outside of myself, I will get to be an advocate for people’s health and a humanitarian who will have a chance to see the other aspect of medical
rights, health, and safety of the patient.” This provision, identifying patients, medication safety are related because it is a nurse’s responsibility to protect the patient from harm and promote safety. Nurses are taught to use multiple checks before administering a drug and use two identifiers. These checks include checking the medication against the order when obtaining it, checking again when preparing the medication and the last check is done at the patient’s bedside prior to giving the medication. Also it is imperative to question any medication order that does not seem fit. The order should include a date, time, name of the medication, dosage strength, the route for
The publication from the institute of medicine has garnered much interest since its publication in 2010 focusing on the future of nursing and the implementation of this with in the nursing community. The nursing profession has over 3 million members and is the largest segment of the nation’s health care workforce. Working on the front lines of patient care, nurses can play a vital role in helping realize the objectives set forth in the 2010 IOM (Institute of Medicine). One of the recommendations is that of a nurse residency program for new nurses or nurses transitioning into new clinical practice areas. The area I work in is home health and this is a growth area the need for a residency program cannot be over stated home
Nursing is an excellent career choice, where an individual acquires great gratitude while attending to others necessities. If someone is constantly trying to improve themselves and wanting to be challenged in life, “as nurses, we face tremendous challenges and often see and do things that are extraordinary” (Ulrich xix). By becoming a registered nurse the individual will make a difference. Nursing allows an individual to continuously be benefiting a fellow human being, not only with the patient but with their families as well, having the opportunity to becoming someone especial in the patient’s life. Nursing is a
Nursing can be a demanding career, but the benefits far much outweigh the challenges. Most importantly, it’s the rewards it offers by allowing an opportunity to make a difference in another person’s life through the provision of care when they need it. Just as Patricia Benner theorized in her book “Novice to Expert,” nursing encompasses both educational knowledge and extensive clinical experience acquired throughout one’s career. This far, I continue to acquire knowledge and clinical knowhow which will promote proper and efficient care to patients. Since I began practicing one year ago in a long-term healthcare facility, I have interacted with patients, families, physicians and other members of the healthcare team to coordinate patient’s care which has enabled me to gain confidence in myself. While I cannot deny that it was difficult to transition from a student to a licensed nurse, I learnt to overcome these challenges and focus on my strengths. Practicing as an LPN has provided a platform to learn and gain experience even though the duties and responsibilities are limited by the scope of practice.
Breeding, et al. (2013) states that there are a number of published documents addressing the quality, safety, and explicitly medication safety within ICUs worldwide. A large proportion of these studies focused on specific interventions such as: (1) creating “No interruption zones”; (2) addressing drug incompatibilities; (3) implementing automatic drug dispensing systems or electronic prescription of medications; or (4) implementing an ICU pharmacist role (Breeding, et al., 2013, p. 59). It is essential for multidisciplinary teams to be formed for medication safety promotion within this population. These teams would include physicians, pharmacists, and nurses (to also include advanced practicing nurses [APRN], such as nurse practitioners [NPs] or clinical nurse specialists
This paper is proposing we implement a nurse residency program at Trident Health. Research suggests that implementing a nurse residency program that develops these new nurse graduates will have a positive impact on our facility. New graduates nurses have a lot to learn and through a residency program we can provide them the foundation to be successful, competent, confident nurses who would further their careers at Trident Health.
Our health care environment is faced with the patient safety issues, shortages on health and human resources, increasingly complex health care needs. Before coming to activity I expect that Interprofesional activity is a way of bringing all the perspectives of different healthcare professionals to improve patient safety. During the activity I found the role of a mental health counselor might treat a patient who has been the victim of domestic abuse, individuals struggling with poor self-esteem, helps individuals and families deal with difficult emotions, in a variety of settings, including schools, hospitals, private offices and clinics, and substance abuse treatment facilities. On the other hand, Pharmacists can play an active role in treating
In today’s society, the medical field is constantly thriving with technological improvements and the growth of educated individuals that contribute to the well-being of others. Nurses make up the largest majority of the industry, and with that, nursing is the fastest growing occupation. Nursing is a job that allows people to not only take care of the sick but also to experience, learn, and further their interests of the human body.
My calling to nursing started when my father got diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2015. I watched him suffering through radiation and chemotherapy, but what got him through those hard times was the help of some great loving and caring nurses. As I became more involved in taking care of him, my passion for nursing had greatly increased. Now, for nine years, I have maintained a commitment to caring for others in the field of Nursing. Being a registered nurse (RN), I have taken care of one patient at a time, which I have been involved in the amelioration of lives, and have only been left wanting to give and do more. Pursuing a master of science in nursing (MSN) is more than just a logical or natural progression for my career. It is a life choice, one that is backed by highly refined clinical judgments and in-depth exposure to an array of set-ups, and levels of care. In this personal statement, I will deeper highlight an explanation of my career goals, the reasons for my choice of Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) specialization, and lastly the reason for pursuing an advanced degree in nursing.
Graduates of master’s degree programs in nursing are prepared with broad knowledge and practice expertise that builds and expands on baccalaureate or entry-level nursing practice (AACN, 2006, 2010, pg. 4). This preparation provides graduates with a fuller understanding of the discipline of nursing in order to engage in higher level practice and leadership in a variety of settings and commit to lifelong learning (AACN, 2006, 2010, pg. 4). For those nurses seeking a terminal degree, the highest level of preparation within the discipline, the new conceptualization for master’s education will allow for seamless movement into a research or practice-focused doctoral program (AACN, 2006, 2010, pg. 4). The world of nursing is an ever changing and challenging field. In your career, just like an emergency field one needs to be prepared for anything and everything. Earning a master’s degree in nursing can open up career opportunities and lead to salary increases. (2U 10/10/12).
Receiving a degree in Nursing, I will grant me an opportunity to communicate and work with a team to solve a medical situation. By being a Nurse, I will not only assist people's medical needs but to make a difference in people's lives and ensure them a better outlook on their health and their well being. In short, it makes me feel good that I can provide care to those in need, and inspire hope that their health will
My career objectives are to advance my nursing career through professional development of self by engaging in long life learning through continuing education in graduate school. Also, to assume leadership role in the use of evidence based research in healthy public policy and contribute to population health. There are certain characteristics that are very important of being a nurse. Becoming a nurse means to take value of the craft and work. A nurse should see this, as a “calling” and not a typical job that people usually do not value. The choice of becoming a nurse should not be based upon on the income or security, but the purpose that it comes with of becoming a nurse. The purpose of becoming a nurse is to value all human life, and provide accountability, professionalism and compassion to a patient. Part of
