Disability is a definition of a physical or mental condition which impacts on a person’s movements, activities and senses. People with disabilities were informed of bias and disadvantages compared to an ordinary person. There are many biases and prejudices contributed to the discrimination of individuals with a disability. Partly because of social connotations the disabled people are useless, cannot work. In fact, these extraordinary people always bring and do incredible things. They not only overcome their grim fate, but also bring good things to life, especially those who are perfectly considering better than an ordinary person, they are not aware of the capacity of individuals disabilities with them characteristics such as loyalty, dedication, and hard work.

This week Dawn has learned that just because someone has an impairment or disability does not necessarily mean that they are handicap. For instance, a blind person can live a very normal life and use their other senses such as touch, hearing and smell to navigate their way around any particular obstacle. Data from the National Center for Educational Statistics (2011) indicates that 707,000 students with disabilities enrolled in 3,680 two-year and four-year postsecondary institutions in 2008-2009 (U.S. Department of Education National Center for Education Statistics, Institute of Education Sciences, 2011). This number will just continue to increase as more students with disabilities transition into higher education. The one thing that will not change is the public concern regarding accountability and assessment. The public is demanding proof of learner growth in the programs. In addition, federal legislation exists which prevents the discrimination of individuals with disabilities. Legislation including the Vocational Rehabilitation Act and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in addition to others provide legal protection for students with disabilities in the academic learning environment.

Most do not have access to medical or insurance because they do not have a job in which they can support themselves. This kind of discrimination and treatment creates disabled people to have feelings of anger and sadness as they are not being protected and their rights are violated. Another form of discrimination that is occurring is how disabled students are not receiving the education and support they need. Today there is not enough teachers who are willing to help disabled students with their special education. Also, budget cuts are currently affecting public schools and instead of investing that money for special education, 85% of the budget is spent on salaries and the benefits of the employees. This not only is affecting the disabled students, but also there are not available resources to support them. Although disabled students are discriminated there are some great resources that are available to them. On the other hand, handy cap students that come from low- income families have an advantage of receiving free education and transportation.

However, it is important to help the students prepare for a college setting as well in which learning disabilities also play a huge role. It is not only important for school institutions to help students with learning disabilities prepare for college, it is also important that the family is supportive and helpful in order for the student to succeed.
