The Outsiders Did you know that S.E. Hinton’s first royalty check was only worth ten dollars? Although, The Outsiders did not get popular very quickly, it was eventually made into a major motion picture and is now a best-seller. The Outsiders the movie and book are both great works, but the book provided more detail and was just way better. Therefore, this paper will compare the similarities and discrepancies between the book and movie. Ultimately, the goal of this essay is to provide evidence that the movie was quite different than the book. To begin, the first difference I observed between the book and movie is that the movie has a different opening scene than the book. At the beginning of the scene in the book, Darry stepped up to take on anyone, and an old football teammate of his challenged him. Then came running around the corner, ready to fight (Hinton 123-127). The movie depicts this scene exactly how the book does. This is the first similarity is only one of many. Finally, the other similarity I discovered was when Johnny killed Bob. In the book, they went to where Dally was and Dally helped them by giving them his gun, jacket and money. Dally also told them where to hide and how to get there. (Hinton 53-56). The movie also portrays this scene very well. Again, this is only one of the many similarities in the book and movie. In conclusion, despite the differences between the book and movie, both were very compelling. This thesis was firmly established by examining the differences of the book and movie. Furthermore, examining the similarities only strengthened the thesis. Although I did not like the movie very much, it was still a good way to help the class visualize the book.
