The Outsiders Movie And Book Comparison

Some similarities are, one, the characters are the same. Winnie foster,in the movie and the book still kept her same name, her feelings about wanting to leave. In the book on page 13 it says , “Winnie Foster sat on the bristly grass just outside the fence” showing that her name is the same. The book and the movie of the Outsiders are two very different stories. The book has so much more detail then the movie. The movie is not the most detailed but it does get its point across. There are may similarities and also many differences between the two the book is by far more interesting and more detailed then the movie. I enjoyed the book a lot and the movies a lot but the movie was missing a lot.

The novel has more detail than the movie because in the novel it showed more of the characters backstories it doesnt talk about Ponyboy’s school or about Dally’s past life was like before he moved and how Johnny got beat up by the Soc while the movie skipped all of that. Another is that in the novel you can hear the character’s thoughts you could hear what Ponyboy was thinking throughout the whole story and because the novel was in first person and the movie was in third person so you couldn't really hear what the character was thinking in the movie.

The plot and the setting of book and movie are very similar. There was a lot of thins borrowed from the book, but there was a lot changed as well. The movie followed the plot of book very closely and portrayed the setting of the book very well. A lot of the dialogue was borrowed and spoken directly as it was in the book.

When the socs and the greasers are going to have the big rumble in the book Darry asks if anyone wants to fight him but in the movie the person that he fight in both the book and movie says he will fight him. After the big rumble Dally and Ponyboy go to see Johnny who is almost dead and after he dies Ponyboy freaks out in the book and thinks he's not dead but in the movie it is only Dally. In the book Dally goes and robs a grocery store but in the movie he robs the gas station. When Dally leaves in the movie the guy shoots Dally and injures him but in the book he never had a gun. When Dally is shot by the police he is shot at the park in the movie but in the book he is shot in the street under the lamppost. There is so much more differences in the movie but it would be impossible to say them all so that is all of the differences i found from the book and

The book and the film were both simular, and yet different in many ways. An example would be, in the film, Ponyboy was walking to the drive-in and meeting Cherri and Marcia. Although in the book, Ponyboy began his journey by telling the readers about his experience about being jumped by the Socs and being threatened. The director probably had some options to pick from to leave out from the movie, and the director chosed this to leave out. Leaving out the part where Ponyboy was jumped was an effective move because without the experience Ponyboy was lost and helpless because he did not know what to do when he and Johnny got cornered in the park by Bob and other Socs.

The novel of The Outsiders is better than the movie. The novel gives more vivid details than the movie does. Even though the movie shows actual image, the novel lets you have your own image of what’s going on. The movie did not show the part where Ponyboy was getting jump. That is where most of the conflicts started. It also didn’t show the part where they were at the court, which is a really important part in The Outsiders. The feeling and tension are more intense in the novel than it is in the movie. Over all, the movie is not better than the novel.

Both share the same plot, and there are very little differences between the two. These are a few of the differences that I was able to notice between the book and the movie. There are several others throughout the story, but they are all just as minute and in the end they have no effect on the outcome of the story. In the beginning of the book it shows Pony coming out of the movie house and walking on the sidewalk as he gets jumped(Hinton). Also in the book when Pony and Johnny were searching for the church Pony talks to the farmer about where Jay Mountain is and lies to the farmer saying the church was the “army headquarters”(Hinton). In the book when Johnny is in the hospital it says that he is on his back. The last thing different in the book is in the end where Pony’s school teacher tells him to write a paper, and the movie ends with him writing the story.
