Chapter 1, Problem 1.57SP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: A three-dimensional representation of the given molecule is to be drawn by the use of wedge and dashed lines and straight line atoms are to be circled.

Concept introduction: The term “yne” indicates the presence of triple bond in a compound. Triple bond consists of one “sigma” and two “pi” bonds. In the case of carbon-carbon triple bond, “sp” hybridization takes place. When one “s” and one “p” orbital overlap with each other, a sigma bond is formed. The overlapping of two unhybridized “p” orbitals of both the carbon atoms result in the formation of two “pi” bonds.

To draw: A three-dimensional representation of the given molecule by the use of wedge and dashed lines and the representation of circled straight line atoms.

In pent-2-yne (CH3CCCH2CH3), there are four atoms in a straight line. Use dashed lines and wedges to draw a three-dimensional representation of this molecule, and circle the four atoms that are in a straight line.
Draw a skeletal ("line") structure of this molecule: CH3 CH3 CH2=CH—N—CH—CH3 Click and drag to start drawing a structure. C C X
Draw the expanded structural formula for 1,3-dichlorocyclopentane.An expanded structural formula shows all the atoms of the molecule and all the bonds between the atoms in the molecule.
