Concept explainers
Close one eye and lean down so that your open eye is at table level. Have your partner drop very small piece of paper (about 2mm square) onto the table.
Hold one figure above the table and then move your finger until you think it is directly above the piece of paper. Move your finger straight down to the table and check whether your finger is, in fact, directly above the paper.
Try this exercise several times, with your partner dropping the piece of paper at different locations. Keep your open eye at the table level. After several tries, exchange roles with your partner.
How can you account for the fact that when your finger misses the piece of paper, your finger is always either in front of the paper or behind it, but never to the left or right of the paper?

- Why is your vision so blurry when you open your eyes while swimming under water? How does a face mask enable clear vision?arrow_forwardcan you write the solutions clearer? thanksarrow_forwardRay Zuvlite is playing with his underwater laser. He descends beneath the water surface in his backyard pool to a vertical depth of 7.09 feet and directs the laser beam at an angle towards the pool's edge. The beam emerges from water (n=1.33) into air at the pool's very edge and projects onto a pool house which is located 17.21 feet horizontally from the pool's edge. The dot on the pool house is observed to be located at a vertical height of 8.75 feet. Determine the distance which Ray is located horizontally out from the edge of the pool.arrow_forward

If the light is mounted a distance of y = 3.50 m above the water, and the light strikes the water at a point that is x = 8.30 m horizontally from the end of the pier, determine the distance from the end of the pier to the point where the light strikes the bottom of the lake if the water is 3.00 m deep. =___marrow_forward
- A person has placed a large, open-topped container 10m high. They fill the container with water to the top. With a sharp needle, they poke a tiny hole near the bottom of the container. The water sprays horizontally out of the hole, arcs through the air like a projectile, and splashes 15m away. How high above the hole is the top of the container?arrow_forwardWhich of the following best explains the view of light one sees during sunset? a. The sunset view is due to diffraction of blue light leaving red light to color the evening sky. b. This is because white light is composed of seven colors in which red is dispersed during sunset. c. This phenomenon occurs when red light is absorbed and re-radiated by clouds and air. d. This view is because of the cones in the eyes which are sensitive to red light during near evening. Which of the following is INCORRECT regarding estimation of speeds and distances of astronomical objects? a. The cosmic ladder is used as an approximation but values were not actually measured by an astronomical instrument. b. The motion of luminous celestial objects can change its produced wavelength of light which can either shorten or lengthen. c. Radar ranging which is used for relatively near objects can be adjusted to measure the distances and speeds of nearby galaxies. d.
