Chapter 12.3, Problem 5P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The reason as to why heats of hydrogenation cannot be used to determine the relative stability of 2-methylpent-2-ene and 3-methylpent-1-ene is to be stated.

Concept introduction: Hydrogenation reaction is exothermic in nature due to the fact that the bonds are stronger in product than in reactant. Heat of hydrogenation can be used as measure for relative stability of alkenes when they are reduced to same alkane. Higher the stability of alkene, lower is the heat of hydrogenation.

Explain the role strain plays on stability and reactivity of a cyclic alkane such as cyclopropane.
Estimate the ratio of the axial to equatorial form of 1-chlorocyclohexane at room temperature. Why does one form predominate over the other at room temperature?
Explain why heats of hydrogenation cannot be used to determine the relative stability of 2-methylpent-2-ene and 3-methylpent-1-ene. A, B, and C, each subjected to hydrogenation. The number of rings and π bonds refers to the reactant (A, B, or C) prior to hydrogenation.
