A 22°C day is warm, while a swimming pool at 22°C feelscool. Why?
The prevailing winds on the Hawaiian island of Kauai blow from the northeast. The winds cool as they go up the slope of Mt. Waialeale (elevation 1523 m), causing water vapor to condense and rain to fall. There is much more precipitation at the summit than at the base of the mountain. In fact, Mt. Waialeale is the rainiest spot on earth, averaging 11.7 m of rainfall a year. But what makes the winds cool?
When night falls, the temperature of the earth’s surface starts to drop. On a cool night, dew starts to form on the grass as water vapor condenses. Once dew starts to form, the rate of temperature decrease slows. Explain why this change occurs.

- The temperature of the ocean off the coast of New Jersey ranges from about 3 °C in late winter to about 24 °C in late summer. Explain how the evaporation of water helps limit high temperatures in humid climates.arrow_forward
- In very humid climates where there are numerous bodies of water, such as in Florida, it is unusual for temperatures to rise above about 35C (95F). - On a cold day, you grab a piece of metal and a fallen tree limb, both with bare hands. Both have been lying outside for a long time and are at the same temperature. The metal feels colder than the tree limb. Why?arrow_forwardSea breezes occur along coastlines, and consist of cool air moving toward the shore from the ocean. However, this only occurs during the day, and is a stronger effect when the air temperature on the land is greatest and the air temperature above the water is coldest. At night, the breezes are reversed, moving from the land toward the ocean. Taking into consideration the specific heat capacities of water and sand (which is about the same as that of concrete), explain how sea breezes form during the day and change direction at night.arrow_forwardIn warm regions where tropical plants grow but the temperature may drop below freezing a few times in the winter, the destruction of sensitive plants due to freezing can be reduced by watering them in the evening. - The temperature on Mars averages −47.2°C. What is that temperature in Fahrenheit, using TF = 9/5TC + 32°arrow_forwardDuring a plant visit, it was noticed that a 12-m-long section of a 10-cm-diameter steam pipe is completely exposed to the ambient air. The temperature measurements indicate that the average temperature of the outer surface of the steam pipe is 75°C when the ambient temperature is 5°C. There are also light winds in the area at 10 km/h. The emissivity of the outer surface of the pipe is 0.8, and the average temperature of the surfaces surrounding the pipe, including the sky, is estimated to be 0°C. Determine the amount of heat lost from the steam during a 10-h-long work day. Steam is supplied by a gas-fired steam generator that has an efficiency of 80 percent, and the plant pays $1.05/therm of natural gas. If the pipe is insulated and 90 percent of the heat loss is saved, determine the amount of money this facility will save a year as a result of insulating the steam pipes. Assume the plant operates every day of the year for 10 h.
