Chapter 17, Problem 21ICA
There is currently an effort in the United States to replace incandescent light bulbs with more energy-efficient technologies, including compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) and light-emitting diodes (LEOs). The lumen (Im] is the SI unit of luminous flux, a measure of the perceived power of light. Luminous flux is adjusted to reflect the varying sensitivity of the human eye to different wavelengths of light.
To test the power usage, you run an experiment and measure the following data. Create a proper plot of these data, with electrical consumption (EC) on the ordinate.

Many patients get concerned when a test involves injection of a radioactive material. For example for scanning a gallbladder, a few drops of Technetium-99m isotope is used. However, it
takes about 24 hours for the radiation levels to reach what we are exposed to in day-to-day activities. Below is given the relative intensity of radiation as a function of time.

The relative intensity is related to time by the equation R = A e^(Bt).
Find the constant A by the least square method.(correct to 4 decimal places)
When the Sun becomes a red giant, it's luminosity will be 2000 times its current value. The solar
flux at Earth will also increase by a factor of 2000. Neglecting the greenhouse effect, the surface
temperature of the earth is determined by thermal equilibrium: the flux of radiation absorbed
equals the flux of radiation emitted. This means the Earth's surface flux must also increase by a
factor of 2000. If the current average surface temperature is 58 degrees F. what will the average
surface temperature be when the Sun is a red giant. [Hint: use the Stefan-Boltzman's law in the
form of a ratio, and remember that the temperature there is in Kelvins.]
A butane torch is a tool in which butane is burned to create a flame. A detector, located at 2meters from the flame, only measures the flux of green photons (λ=500[nm]). At a certain moment, the detector measures a photon flux of ϕ(500nm)=3.37⋅1025[s−1⋅m−2]. For simplicity, assume that the flame behaves like a black body and has a spherical shape with a radius of 15cm, while the detector radius is 5cm. What is the temperature of the butane flame in?
