Chapter 17, Problem 34P

For Prob. 17-29 estimate the elongation of the rope if a 7000-lbf loaded mine cart is placed on the cage which weighs 1000 lbf. The results of Prob. 4-7 may be useful.

17-29 A mine hoist uses a 2-in 6 × 19 monitor-steel wire rope. The rope is used to haul loads of 4 tons from the shaft 480 ft deep. The drum has a diameter of 6 ft. the sheaves are of good-quality cast steel, and the smallest is 3 ft in diameter.

  1. (a)   Using a maximum hoisting speed of 1200 ft/min and a maximum acceleration of 2 ft/s2 estimate the stresses in the rope.
  2. (b)   Estimate the various factors of safety.

The corediameter of the double start square threaded screw having a pitch of 12mm is 50 mm. A load of 18kN is lifted through a distance of 180mm. Find the work done(in Joule)in lifting the loadand the efficiency of the screw, when 1. The load rotates with the screw, and 2. The load rests on the loose head which does not rotate with the screw. The external and internal diameter of the bearing surface of the loose head are 60 mm and 10 mmrespectively. The coefficient of friction for the screw is 0.11,whilefor the bearing surface is 0.13.
A hydraulic cylinder with a bore radius of 100 mm and an outer radius of 200 mmhas been designed to withstand a maximum internal pressure of 200 MPa inservice. During operation, the pressure within the cylinder is retained by a freelysliding piston. The steel used in the manufacture has Young’s modulus of 210GNm-2. In an alternative design, the cylinder has been constructed as a compoundcylinder (duplex cylinder) with the same bore and outer radii by shrink-fitting twotubes of the same steel. The nominal radius at the common interface is 150 mmand the radial interference (shrinkage allowance, δ) is 100 μm (micro-meters).a) Determine using Lame’s equations, the radial and circumferentialstresses at the cylinder bore, common interface, and outer surface.b) Graphically present (sketch) the variation of each of these stresses acrossthe cylinder wall, clearly indicating the values at the inner and outer surfacesof each cylinder.c) Draw the Mohr's circles representing the stresses acting on…
