Chapter 17, Problem 83E

Tees Does it matter what kind of tee a golfer places the ball on? The company that manufactures “Stinger” tees claims that the thinner shaft and smaller head lessen resistance and drag, reducing spin and allowing the ball to travel farther. In August 2003, Golf Laboratories, Inc., compared the distance traveled by golf balls hit off regular wooden tees to those hit off Stinger tees. All the balls were struck by the same golf club using a robotic device set to swing the club head at approximately 95 miles per hour. Summary statistics from the test are shown in the table below. Assume that 6 balls were hit off each tee and that the data were suitable for inference.

Which model—the one for parliaments or the one for ministries (or cabinets)—presented in the article has the greater explanatory power?   How can you tell?
Has the principle of comparison been addressed in this experimental design? A company that manufactures golf balls produces a new type of ball that is supposed to travel significantly farther than the company's previous golf ball. To determine this, 40 new-style golf balls and 40 original- style golf balls are randomly selected from the company's production line on a specific day. The balls are then placed in bag and shaken. A golf pro then selects a ball and hits it. The distance the ball travels is then measured. The bag is shaken again, and the golf O Yes, because the balls are randomly selected, the distances of the new ball can be compared to the distances of the original ball. O Yes, because the original ball type is included in this experiment, the distances the different balls travel can be accurately compared. O No, because a placebo ball was not used, a comparison cannot be made to determine if the new ball travels significantly farther. pro selects another ball to hit. She…
Can people tell the difference between a female nose and a male nose? This research question was examined in an article. Eight Caucasian males and eight Caucasian females posed for nose photos. The article states that none of the volunteers wore nose studs or had prominent nasal hair. Each person placed a black Lycra tube over his or her head in such a way that only the nose protruded through a hole in the material. Photos were then taken from three different angles: front view, three-quarter view, and profile. These photos were shown to a sample of undergraduate students. Each student in the sample was shown one of the nose photos and asked whether it was a photo of a male or a female. The response was then classified as either correct or incorrect. The following table was constructed using summary values reported in the article. Sex ID View Front Profile Three-Quarter Correct 29 26 23 Incorrect 11 14 17   Is there evidence that the proportion of correct sex…
