Concept explainers
A ship sailing from the ocean into a fresh-water harbor sinks slightly deeper into the water. Does the buoyant force on it change? If so, does the force increase or decrease?
To identify: Whether the buoyant force on ship will change or not.
To state: If yes then whether the force will increase or decrease.
Answer to Problem 41A
Buoyant force will remain same.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
Buoyant force: The force applied by liquid on the object.
The force applied by liquid on any object is known as buoyant force. On any floating object, buoyant force is always equal to the weight of object, it does not depends on type of liquid. Hence, buoyant force acting on sailing ship will remain same in both fresh water and in salt water.
Conclusion:
Buoyant force will remain same.
