Chapter 20, Problem 42PS
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The Lewis electron dot structures for tri fluoromethane sulfonic acid and the geometry around the carbon and Sulphur atom should be given.

Concept introduction:

Lewis dot structure: For a given molecule, the bonding concerning the atoms and also the lone pairs can be shown by the diagram.

In this structure a single bond is represented by one dot pair and double bond is represented by two dot pairs and so on.

VSEPR Theory [Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion Theory]:

Geometry of the molecules can be predicted using VSEPR Theory. It is based on the number of electron pairs around the central atom of the molecule. Depending upon the bond pairs and lone pairs, geometries can be classified as linear, bent, pyramidal, trigonal planar, tetrahedral, octahedral and so on.

(a) The atomic weight of carbon is 12, hydrogen is 1 and oxygen is 16, and the formula for the combustion of methane (CH4) is given by : CH4 + 2 O2 –→ CO2 + 2 H2O + energy A mole of methane releases 810 KJ of energy on burning. Calculate the weight of carbon dioxide produced by burning 5kg of methane. Identify an alternative gas for combustion that produces less carbon dioxide than methane and state how it is generated.
It is known that carbon dioxide (CO2) emission is responsible for at least 50% of greenhouseemissions. Do we need to be concerned about GWP of CO2 when using it as a refrigerant? What is the ODP of CO2?
