Monoatomic ions are formed either by loss of electrons or by gain of electrons. The monoatomic ions formed by loss of electrons are positively charged while the monoatomic ions formed by gain of electrons are negatively charged. They do so to attain noble gas configuration of the nearest noble gas element.
