Chapter 26, Problem 4MC
Summary Introduction

Introduction:

Industrial fermentation is a process which uses microbes for large-scale growth to produce desired compound. It is of two types namely batch production and continuous flow production. During fermentation, when all substrates are fermented by the organism until they are exhausted and a final product is formed, it is called batch production. When new medium is continuously added while products and wastes are removed, it is called continuous flow production. Growth medium is also called as a culture medium. It provides nutrients and optimum conditions for the growth of microorganisms. It can be liquid, solid or semi-solid.
