“Alternation of generations” is a term, which is used to describe different phases of a life cycle in some eukaryotes. The term “alternation” is used with respect to ploidy. Ploidy is a term, which describes how many sets of chromosomes are present in an organism or cell. An organism can be diploid, meaning it has two sets of chromosomes. It can also be haploid, meaning it has only one set of chromosomes.
