Summary Introduction

To review:

The importance of polar and nonpolar groups in the structures of lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids.

Introduction:

Biomolecules are organic compounds that include carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, as well as nucleic acids. These are called so because these molecules are essential for the survival of living organisms. Proteins are polymers of various amino acids. Amino acids are linked to each other via peptide bonds and this sequence is also known as a polypeptide.

Lipids are insoluble in water and mostly nonpolar in nature. These are of three basic types, namely: neutral lipids, phospholipids, and steroids. Nucleic acids are biomolecules formed by polymerization of nucleotides. Nucleotides are composed of a pentose sugar, nitrogenous base, and a phosphate group.
