Concept introduction:
Binary compounds are defined as those ionic compounds that contain metal ions connected to nonmetal ions. The overall charge of such compounds is neutral because the oppositely charged metal cations and nonmetal anions are bonded to each other.
In binary molecular compounds, both the elements are nonmetals.
The aqueous solution of hydrogen with a nonmetal atom forms a binary acid.
Ternary compounds are defined as those ionic compounds that contain metal ions connected to two other elements. They have a monoatomic metal cation and an oxyanion that is polyatomic in their formulas.
The aqueous solution of hydrogen with a nonmetal atom and oxygen atoms forms a ternary acid.

Introductory Chemistry: Concepts and Critical Thinking (8th Edition)
- Write a balanced equation for the reaction of hydroiodic acid, HI, with calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2. Then, write the balanced complete ionic equation and the net ionic equation for this neutralization reaction.arrow_forward3.101 Which (if any) of the following compounds are electrolytes? (a) glucose, C6H12O6, (b) ethanol, C2H5OH, (c) magnesium sulfide, MgS, (d) sulfur hexafluoride, SF6arrow_forwardDescribe some physical and chemical properties of acids and bases. What is meant by a strong acid or base? Are strong acids and bases also strong electrolytes? Give several examples of strong acids and strong bases.arrow_forward
- 4-78 (Chemical Connections 4A) How does fluoride ion protect the tooth enamel against decay?arrow_forwardEach box represents a tiny volume in an aqueous solution of an ionic compound. (For simplicity, water molecules are not shown.) Which box represents: (a) Na2CO3, (b) NH4NO3, (C) CaBr2? Explain your reasoning.arrow_forwardWrite balanced equations for the reaction of sulfur with the following metals to form solids that you can take to be ionic when the anion is S2-. (a) potassium (b) magnesium (c) aluminum (d) calcium (e) iron (forming Fe2+ ions)arrow_forward
- Many over-the-counter antacid tablets are now formulated using calcium carbonate as the active ingredient, which enables such tablets to also be used as dietary calcium supplements. As an antacid for gastric hyperacidity, calcium carbonate reacts by combining with hydrochloric acid found in the stomach, producing a solution of calcium chloride, converting the stomach acid to water, and releasing carbon dioxide gas (which the person suffering from stomach problems may feel as a “burp”). Write the unbalanced chemical equation for this process.arrow_forwardYou are given mixtures containing the following compounds. Which compound in each pair could be separated by stirring the solid mixture with water? (a) NaOH and Ca(OH)2 (b) MgC12 and MgF2 (c) AgI and KI (d) NH4Cl and PbCl2arrow_forwardYou take 1.00 g of an aspirin tablet (a compound consisting solely of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen), burn it in air, and collect 2.20 g CO2 and 0.400 g H2O. You know that the molar mass of aspirin is between 170 and 190 g/mol. Reacting 1 mole of salicylic acid with I mole of acetic anhydride (C4H6O3) gives you 1 mole of aspirin and 1 mole of acetic acid (C2H4O2). Use this information to determine the molecular formula of salicylic acid.arrow_forward
- Experiments show that propionic acid (CH3CH2COOH) is a weak acid. Write the chemical equation.arrow_forwardHydrogen peroxide is used as a cleansing agent in the treatment of cuts and abrasions for several reasons. It is an oxidizing agent that can directly kill many microorganisms; it decomposes on contact with blood, releasing elemental oxygen gas (which inhibits the growth of anaerobic microorganisms); and it foams on contact with blood, which provides a cleansing action. In the laboratory, small quantities of hydrogen peroxide can be prepared by the action of an acid on an alkaline earth metal peroxide, such as barium peroxide: BaO2(s)+2HCl(aq)H2O2(aq)+BaCl2(aq) What mass of hydrogen peroxide should result when 1.50 g barium peroxide is treated with 25.0 mL hydrochloric acid solution containing 0.0272 g HCI per mL? What mass of which reagent is left unreacted?arrow_forward
