Chapter 7.10, Problem 22P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The value of pKa of conjugate acid of the base which can remove proton from a terminal alkyne to form an acetylide ion should be identified.

Concept Introduction:

In a reaction which strongly favours the formation of products, the base used to remove proton from the acid should be stronger than the base formed when the proton is removed.

Order of electronegativity of carbon atoms:

sp>sp2>sp3

Most electronegative is the sp hybridized carbon atom.

The most acidic compound will be the hydrogen which is attached to the most electronegative carbon.

The product in this reaction is basic enough to be protonated by a dilute HCl solution. Draw the protonated species, clearly showing where protonation occurs. Draw all possible resonance structures of the conjugate acid of the product, and use these to explain why the product is so much more basic than a typical ester, like ethyl acetate.
The pKa of our product is ~ 2-3 units lower than the pKa of phenol. Draw all possible resonance structures of the conjugate base of the product, and use these to explain why our product is so much more acidic than phenol.
9.) Explain why NaNH2 favors the enolate ion in the following reaction, but NaOH favors an equilibrium. (B: represents the base – either NANH, or NaOH). You'll need to consider acid/base strength (pKa values). B: + BH enolate ion
