Concept explainers
The configuration shown in Fig. P9.29 depicts a satellite repeater with two antennas, one pointed towards the antenna of ground station 1 and the other towards the antenna of ground station 2. All antennas are parabolic dishes, antennas A1 and A4 are each 4 m in diameter, antennas A2 and A3 are each 2 m in diameter, and the distance between the satellite and each of the ground stations is 40,000 km. Upon receiving the signal by its antenna A2, the satellite transponder boosts the power gain by 80 dB and then retransmits the signal to A4. The system operates at 10 GHz with Pt = 1 kW. Determine the received power Pr. Assume all antennas to be lossless.

The specifications of the antenna are such that its pattern consists basically of one major lobe and, for simplicity, no minor lobes (if there are any minor lobes they are of such very low intensity and you can assume they are negligible/zero). Also it is desired that the pattern is symmetrical in the azimuthal plane. In order to meet the desired objectives, the main lobe of the pattern should have a half-power beamwidth of 10 degrees. In order to expedite the design, it is assumed that the major lobe of the normalized radiation intensity of the antenna is approximated by U (0, p) = cos" (0) And it exists only in the upper hemisphere (0 ≤ 0 ≤+2,0≤p≤ 2л). Determine the: (a) Value of n (not necessarily an integer) to meet the specifications of the major lobe. Keep 5 significant figures in your calculations. (b) Exact maximum directivity of…arrow_forward
