Chapter 9, Problem 82SE

Potato Chip Quality Control. NDC Technology’s MM710e On-Line Snacks Gauge rapidly measures surface brownness of potato chips just before packaging. This allows for a high degree of control over this important characteristic of a potato chip; chips that are too brown are overfried, and chips that are not sufficiently brown are underfried. A potato chip manufacturer is now using the MM710e to assess the quality of the chips it produces; one of this manufacturer’s goals is to produce less than 1 overfried chip in every 1000 chips. In a recent random sample of 111,667 chips taken from the production lines of the manufacturer’s production facilities nationwide, the MM710e found 98 overfried chips. Conduct a hypothesis test to determine if the sample data indicates the manufacturer is meeting its goal for overfried chips at α = .05.

Silicon chip manufacturers require the use of so-called "clean rooms" in which the air is filtered in a special way to keep the number of dust particles to a minimum. Five air samples were taken in each room and the dust level was measured on a scale of 1 (low) to 10 (high). Room 1 Room 2 Room 3 5 3 1 6.5 6 1.5 4 4 3 7 4.5 2.5 6 3 4 a) Do an analysis of variance and interpret the result.b) Based on the above results, if appropriate, use the Tukey-Kramer test to make all pairwise comparisons of clean rooms.
Arsenic is a chemical element that occurs in many minerals, usually in conjunction with sulfur and metals, and also as a pure elemental crystal. The main use of metallic arsenic is for strengthening alloys of copper and lead. Unfortunately, arsenic occurs in some ground water. In large quantities it is toxic for multicellular life. A mean arsenic level of 8 particles per billion (ppb) is considered safe for agricultural use. A well in Texas is used to water cotton crops. This well is tested regularly for arsenic. A random sample 37 tests gave a sample mean of 7.2 ppb arsenic with standard deviation of 1.9 ppb. Assume that arsenic levels are normally distributed. We are to use the sample data and test if mean arsenic level in the well in question is less than 8 ppb. a. Test statistic isb. The ? − value of the test isc. At the significance level calculated in part c), we conclude that mean arsenic level in thewell is
Cellulon, a manufacturer of home insulation, wants to develop guidelines for builders and consumers on how the thickness of the insulation in the attic of a home and the outdoor temperature affect natural gas consumption. In the laboratory, it varied the insulation thickness and temperature. A few of the findings are:
