Concept Introduction:
Ionic radius is distance between nucleus and electron in the outermost shell of an ion. When the atom losses electron form a cation, the lost electron no longer contributes to shielding the other electrons. Consequently, other electrons are more attracted to the nucleus and the radius of the atom get small.
