In this final essay I have included works from IDS 101 Course: Essay collection week 1 titled Self-Reflection Profile Essay, week 2 Titled Critical Analysis Essay, and Week 7 Final Research project. I have also included three of, what I consider, my best discussion posts. Throughout my eight weeks in IDS 101 cornerstone, I have learned principles and techniques related to critical thinking, research writing, and digital communications. Within critical thinking I have learned critical thinking skills such as how to communicate appropriately through the use of writing. some of those skills include writing to discover patterns, find new ways of tackling a project, even to improve a new way of thinking (The Craft of research p.14). For example, an instructional manual on how to repair car, or fix an appliance is considered a research paper, since someone had to investigate how to do it. Moreover, I was specially interested in the learning about how my writing and thinking could improve by foreseeing my reader’s critical questions (p.13). Some of the principles I learned were to write up my research in a standard form that is recognized by the community, such as writing for the general public, or lawmakers. Wording and use of terms is therefore matched to the audience educational level. Another technique I learned was to summarize my research paper into three main points “1) What you are writing about 2) What you don’t know about it 3) why you want your reader to know and care about it” (p46). Additionally, I found this last technique helpful in creating my thesis statement. In the course study program of the Cornerstone class, I learned how to perform research using the appropriate article research tools. Some of these tools are the school’s library, Google Scholar search engine, and websites that reside in the domain of .Gov, .Edu, .Net. Furthermore, I learned the value of submitting my third draft to E-tutoring, and also use my teacher’s invaluable
Benjamin Franklin once said “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” So, the question I pose today is how do we involve children so that they learn? How do we spark that want inside of a student to because a lifelong learner. The best way to build students’ knowledge and thirst for greater understanding is by creating connections. Having connections between prior knowledge, different subject areas, the “outside” world, and what is being learned now and in the future will help students to achieve higher levels of thinking, as well as, the twenty-first century knowledge and skills that are needed in the collegiate and professional words today. One way to make these connections is by using integrated thematic units. Inga Randle (1997) discussed the fourth grade students of Barbara Pedersen who were so eager to learn they would willingly skip recess to be in the classroom learning. Pedersen used integrated thematic instruction to inspire her students. So, by learning what an integrated thematic unit is, why integrated thematic units should be used, and how to use integrated thematic units teachers can become more like Barbara Pedersen and prepare students more for independent thinking and higher education.

"Constructing a Research Paper" is a unit from "Academic Writing for Graduate Students" was a third edition written by John M. Swales and Christine B. Feak, and published by the University of Michigan in 2012. This book mainly focuses on how to prepare international graduate students to write academic papers. This book consists of a total of 8 units, of which unit 8 explains how to construct a research paper (Swales & Feak, 2012).
1-critical thinking informs reading, writing, speaking and listing. For example, when I read about a certain topic and it was not clear to me I try to look up to the new vocabularies for me and see the meaning. Also, I try to find easier and similar article about this topic or listen to someone while reading it.
A skill that I feel I’m best at is seeing how the pieces fit together. This would be critically thinking. When told a story about hiring someone to try to annoy a person. Something about a flashing light and the placement of a clothesline. I was able to understand the story and provided a logical explanation about how this was an annoyed neighbor. Then, once you gave up the answer, I was reassured my reasoning skills were logically sound. Some stories I read though, made me wonder if the information was for real, such as eating
There are two major issues that impact the health and wellness individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). These major issues include dehydration and constipation. Dehydryation and constipation often go unrecognized in the IDD population, and if it goes unrecognized for too long, death can actually be linked them. These are preventable deaths that need to be understood in this population. Additionaly, caretakers of individuals with IDD must understand these major issue.
This course has helped me enhance my writing abilities and display the rhetorical purpose of my essays. Coming from Lebanon, this course has definitely been a challenge, yet I believe I have learned a great deal this semester. This course encouraged me to engage in ideas of my own that I discovered throughout my writings. The articles I have read challenged me intellectually allowing me to view a writer’s perspective on a specific topic. The engagement with my classmates and the feedback given during this class gave me the opportunity to extend my thinking abilities. The two main techniques that I have learned this semester is; identifying the purpose of my writing, integrating evidence from my articles and supporting my statements.

Authenticity, accuracy, worth of information, knowledge and argument all come under critical thinking. Creativity is defined as the effective and various ways to do business. Through UMUC and a few other resources such as Purdue Online Writing, I learned that to write an effective thesis statement by first identifying what my topic would be, the main point or opinion on the topic and identifying my targeted audience. I’m a cyber guy, so speaking computer technical jargon is natural for me. I tend to lose people in conversations quickly about technology because I typically don’t explain the terminology. Establishing my topic was very straightforward, and creating two supporting main ideas to help my paper transition thoroughly was accomplished easily using simple transition words and research material. When I was preparing my body of my papers, I thought about the audience to whom I was writing. I needed to have great attention to detail when it came to spelling out acronyms and explaining the reason why a particular technology was needed to become one of my main points. I was able to practice with a few coworkers to ensure I had broken down the material and that they could follow
I had discovered years ago that Writing is therapeutic and cleansing, and as critical thinker writing pushed my thought far and width which allowed me to dig deep within me and pull out the right information out of my head. However, one of the problem I had earlier was to convey the information effectively so that my reader could get the message that I intended to pass on. Thus, as I take different writing classes such as EN 101, EN 102, and Sociology intensive Writing I worked toward correcting that weakness that and becomes better as the each semester go by. Critical thinking is the analysis of an issue or a certain event in which we objectively look over it in order to form a logical judgment or a conclusion. It is an important skill to have because by using it, we can avoid situations which can harm us or cause us to be fooled by people who present wrong information in a way which is appealing to the general public. An example would be when someone who you meet in the streets tries to sell you a drink that can “help you become smart”. Before buying it, do your research on its ingredients and try to find out if this product has been tested or not. Critical thinking is a great tool and if we do not use it, then we will fall prey to ignorance and superstitions.
There is a famous tale among the Ibo people of Nigeria that tells the story of an undefeated wrestler. The wrestler had fought all of his tribesmen, all of his countrymen, and all of the animals. Yet, still no one could defeat him. Looking for a challenge, he ventured into the spiritual world. There he wrestles all of the spirits, defeating each of them. He cried out, Is there no one who can defeat me? Everywhere the wrestler ventured, the people would beg him to leave. Then one day a frail looking man appears ready to fight him. The fragile old man is the wrestler’s own chi (the Ibo believe every person possess a chi). Laughing, the wrestler approaches as if to defeat this foe with ease. The concepts of critical thinking and creative thinking are both gaining increasing importance in the world today. Critical thinking allows people to understand difficult concepts in a manner that is clearer and more defined. They can more readily understand those concepts if they employ critical thinking. In all portions of everyday life, a person is expected to make independent judgments. Those judgments are based on experience and knowledge. Without the ability to think critically, every situation that a person comes across would have to be considered in isolation from all other situations. When a person encounters a problem that is a new one, he or she may be able to use critical thinking to solve those problems.
