For this discussion, I decided to look at two of the employment settings I'm most interested in as an LPC: community mental health agencies and nonprofit organizations. In my immediate area, there are both types of these employment settings, such as Song Byrd Behavioral Health, a local mental health facility that offers therapy and counseling for a variety of issues, from grief counseling to PTSD, and Domestic Violence Intervention Services (D.V.I.S.), a local nonprofit domestic violence shelter that aids women and children who come from relationships that involve domestic violence. First, to appropriately answer this discussion post, I wanted to properly define what a community mental health agency is, and what a nonprofit organization is. …show more content…
For one, community mental health agencies and nonprofits may both receive funding from the federal government. The former often receives funding by way of the Affordable Care Act, which, in September of 2015, provided “...approximately $350 million for 1,184 health centers to increase access to services such as medical, oral, behavioral, pharmacy, and vision care. Nearly $150 million will be awarded to 160 health centers for facility renovation, expansion, or construction to increase patient or service capacity” (HHS awards nearly $500 million in Affordable Care Act funding to health centers to expand primary care services). The latter often receives federal funding through governmental agencies by way of grants, such as through SAMHSA, or the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Nonprofits and community mental health agencies may also receive funding through local organizations or the public by way of in-kind donations as …show more content…
According to the website, I learned that “The median annual wage for mental health counselors was $41,880 in May 2015” (Mental Health Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists:Pay,2015). There was not a significant difference between pay for a clinical mental health counselor working at a nonprofit in comparison to working at a community mental health agency. I chose to search for current employment opportunities for clinical mental health counselors working in both of these employment settings. In the state of Oklahoma, which is where I I currently live, I found a listing for a licensed counselor at a residential treatment facility. The pay for this position was between the range of $38k to $50k a year. In the state of Texas, I found a licensed counselor position at the Salvation Army, and the pay for this position ranged between $34k to $35k a year. My assumption is that different organizations pay different salaries, and that a counselor’s salary is also dependent upon other factors such as experience, location, and whether the counselor is still under supervision for their
Successful management of a not-for-profit organization requires providing high-quality service, but at the same time, careful administration - to reduce expenses and automate processes are ongoing requirements. Each type of not-for-profit organization has unique management needs. For example:
The thing to remember is we are a nonprofit so wages are not always the highest. One thing we pride ourselves on is family orientated atmosphere we provide to our employees. Though we do not advertise this, word spreads easily in our small community of mental healthcare.
During my interview with Donna Portnoy, she provided a concrete description as a Mental Health Counselor working in the field of Intellectual Developmental Disabilities. She informed me that she feels it’s easier to find a job as a Social Worker in New York City. From the experience of her classmates with whom she remains in contact and herself, she acknowledged that when it comes to counseling a Mental Health Counselor knows how to counsel, provide treatment strategies and coping intervention. In contrary to a Social worker who provides linkage to services and resources for people to aid into their needs. Donna’s thoughts on the current labor market for counseling are abominable. She feels that a university should establish a linkage to students actually getting a job in their career straight after graduation. She mentioned that every university is different. But adequately if you aren’t license immediately after graduation, it’s hard to find a job to complete your required hours for your license, unless you know somebody in your field of study. She elaborated on the lack of jobs is immense around our nation. License Social Workers aren’t trained on the level of a Mental Health Counselor’s knowledge of theories and psychological perceptions treatment outcomes. Hiring is limited for MHC who graduates who want to work/receive hours under a limited liability license.
In this week’s lesson we are looking at the importance of having a chart of accounts in our nonprofit business. At HOPE which is the business that I support. The main focus is to house and provide support to those who are homeless, mentally ill and may be struggling with dual issues. Because there is a need in a nonprofit to show measurements to determine success in each area. Charts are created for every service area the HOPE supports ( Margolis, S. (2014, 11).
My interview was conducted at Cares of Washington located in Monroe Washington; I interviewed the lead employment Specialist. She works with developmentally disadvantaged individuals and division of vocational rehabilitation refed clients. She decided to get into the helping professional because her family is devoted to the work. He father was a human resource provider as well as her mother, her grandparents where educators and a therapist. She said that she has always felt compelled to help a needy person, and she feels much gratification when he clients see success. Particularly, she expressed the scope of her duties has challenged her beliefs drastically. Furthermore, she works for a non-profit; for nonprofits funding doesn’t apply to certain
The nonprofit sector faces many challenges that make it more difficult to measure its financial performance. Young (2007) states that the survival of nonprofit businesses depends upon receiving financial funding from outside donors such as donations from charities, government contracts, endowments et cetera, and the necessity for having several different revenue sources is a challenge for nonprofit management. In addition, he points out that securing capital for operating is also much different than in the traditional business world. Fortunately, scholars have provided tools and information that will help nonprofits manage and measure their unique financial performance so they may make informed decisions and guide their organizations to sustainability (Young, 2007).
The mission of Central Florida Coalition for the homeless in Orlando is to provide a home for the homeless and give them a chance to develop themselves in all aspects. The purpose of the organization is to offer a home for the homeless and take care of single mothers, children, the disabled as well as give quality education to those in need. The organization strives to provide shelter, clothing and financial aid through jobs to the needy people in the society.
The last stage of my proposal includes no longer recognizing the NCAA as a purely commercial venture. The NCAA as an amateur, educational organization, does not fit well into the traditional antitrust analysis as applied by the court in NCAA v. Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma. By viewing the NCAA as a profit-oriented economic entity, the court struggled in an effort to make sense out of both the per se and rule of reason tests. Justice White's dissent explained that the majority erred by: first, failing to recognize the NCAA's role in promoting amateur athletic competition as an integral part of the process of higher education; second, treating the NCAA television plan as a ‘purely commercial venture’; and third, applying a traditional
I have been working for nonprofits since I entered the United States and no matter the size of nonprofit, all of them where subject to the amount of funding and donations they received. The ability of the charity to provide services was heavily dependent on funding. Some nonprofits like Riley Children’s Hospital receive a lot of funding from the government (state and federal) along with several private donors like athletes. But then there are the nonprofits like one I volunteered in my first month here. It is an outdoor learning center in one of the local elementary in Avon. When I volunteered there, the employee on duty explained that they obtained most of their funding from property taxes and the taxes were being reduced hence
With an economy driven by our relationship with capitalism and bottom lines, it seems inevitable that nonprofits also tap into these business dealings if they are to survive. The third chapter of Leslie R. Crutchfield’s and Heather McLeod Grant’s book, Forces for Good: The Six Practices of High-Impact Nonprofits, titled “Make Markets Work,” delves into the strategies used by nonprofits who harnessed business tactics in an effort to increase their social impact. Using three overall strategies- change business practices; partner with business, and run a business- Crutchfield and McLeod Grant describe how non-profits have achieved successful leverage in the business world.
The United States has an extraordinarily large, diverse, economically powerful and politically influential nonprofit sector, distinct from government and business. It consists of more than 1.6 million registered organizations and institutions and perhaps an equal or even larger number of nonprofit associations that are not required to formally register or report their activities. The U.S. nonprofit sector is more broadly defined than elsewhere and includes schools, hospitals, museums, civil rights groups, labor unions, and many, many others. It accounts for more than six percent of the US Gross Domestic Product and employs more than nine percent of all US workers.
Both of the categorized health care entities have characteristics that are applicable with their established business models. Differences that may distinguish the two business entities may be minor in detail, but an apparent difference that can clearly be defined and highlighted is their apparent business cultures. (Nonprofit versus for-profit)
There is a non-profit organization located in Greenville NC called, The Junior Women’s Association of Greenville, NC. They have a board of directors in addition to members of the organization. They state on their website, http://www.jwagreenville.org/ , that this organization is comprised “of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective leadership of trained volunteers.” I feel that in order to serve with full potential on any board of directors one must feel a real passion for the goal of the organization. I do truly support what this organization stands for and believe that it can help make Greenville a better place. They partner with Association of Junior
Dynamic and youthful design created for the Canadian non-profit organization, COSTI Immigrant Services. The aim of the project was to develop a handbook for international students visiting Canada for the first time. It was imperative for illustrations to resonate with students from all around the world easily, all while tackling challenging subjects like racism and consent.
Nonprofit organizations have several functions, and not each one is alike. Essential to all non-profit organizations are four functions: planning, budgeting, funding and management.
