John Bowlby, the backbone of attachment theories will be discussed throughout this essay to explain and evaluate the key theories of attachment. Health and well-being which is made up of four factors ‘physical, intellectual, emotional and social ' (Jones, 2016), will also be discussed within the essay. The definition of attachment is ‘an act of attaching or the state of being attached. ' (Dictionary, 1400) This will be showed in the assignment, using theorists to analyse the meaning. ' (Brandon et al., 2015) This shows the child 's main caregiver needs to begin to bond with their child for them to form a secure attachment. Bowlby believed ‘caregivers who neglect their children, bring up avoidant children. ' (Larose, & Bernier, 2001, p. 96-120). ‘Ambivalent/resistant children show negative behaviours to gain attention from others. ' (Kobak et al., 1993, p. 231-245) These statements show children who have an insecure attachment with their caregiver have a risk in behaviour problems. They will also have a less chance of developing their social and emotional skills effectively.
Harry Harlow 's research on monkey 's support 's Bowlby 's theory of attachment as he investigated ‘the nature of human love and affection ' (Cherry, 2016) through monkeys. This shows Harlow 's experiments demonstrated the importance of early attachments, emotional bonds and how attachment increases a healthy development. Harlow 's experiment consisted of ‘two wired surrogate mothers and an infant monkey separated from their mother hours after birth. One of the wired monkeys had a soft terrycloth around it and the other one only had food attached with to it. Perhaps the most influential explanation of attachment was presented by John Bowlby who began developing his ideas in the 1940s. Bowlby was commissioned by the World Health Organisation to investigate whether young children were likely to be harmed if they are separated from their mothers in the early years. (Hayes, 1996). Bowlby (1951) reported that infants possesses an innate need to attach to one main attachment figure (this was usually the mother). According to Hayes (1996), this is a special relationship which is qualitatively different from the relationship they form with any other kind of person. He described this as the process of monotropy; however, Bowlby did not deny that babies formed lots of attachments. (Bailey et al. 2008).

The research that has been found, goes into detail about the different types of attachments that infants and children can develop as well as what negative and positive aspects come along with the attachments.

In the part of the essay I will describe and evaluate Bowlbys theory of Attachment and the learning theory of Attachment. I will show strengths and weaknesses in both theories. I will use a collection of source literature to back up and correlate this information.
The studies revealed that the monkeys chose to feed from the uncomfortable wire support first then went on to cling to the comfortable and warm cloth covered support, this revealed that contact comfort was more important than just being fed. These monkeys went onto becoming severely debilitated in their social relationships and also made incapable parents. Bowlby also believed that another important aspect in the development of child rearing is the importance of timing. There is a critical period of bonding between mother and baby which must take place at 6-12 hours after the birth; the contact must take place within that time otherwise attachment risks failure. This belief comes from the ethologists influence of imprinting with young animals primarily goslings.
The theory of attachment was originally developed by child psychiatrist John Bowlby around 1948 (Bretherton, 1992). Attachment theory is when a child attaches/bonds themselves to a parental figure, somebody who cares for the child. Bowlby believed that the impact on a child’s life is greatest when the child and caregiver form an attachment when the child is very young in age (infant). Bowlby stated that if the attachment between the child and caregiver was not secure, that the child could then start to develop delinquent behavior (Schmalleger, 2014). Bowlby stated within his attachment theory that children who were abandoned at an early age, who really had only one parent in their life (other parent could have for instance been in prison), or children that were abused (physically, mentally, emotionally, sexually), were going to
father, grandparents etc. With the strongest attachment still with the mother, the ‘fear of stranger’s response’ weakens. A Criticism of ‘cupboard love theory’, were Harlow’s study involving rhesus monkeys (1959). He separated new born monkeys from their mothers and raised them in a cage each containing a blanket, he noticed the monkeys became attached to the blanket but were concerned when the blanket was removed. But to determine whether it was food or close comfort was more important, Harlow placed a monkey with two ‘different mothers’, one being a ‘mother’ made of wire but with a bottle attached and the other being a ‘mother’ made of a soft blanket but with no bottle attached. Harlow found that the monkey spent most time with the clothed mother, and concluded that monkeys have an unlearned need for ‘contact comfort’ which is as essential as the need for food. He also found that the clothed mother served as a secure environment for the monkey. When Harlow placed a ‘fear stimuli’ in the cage the monkey would explore it before retreating back to clothed mother for security, however when the clothed mother was removed the monkey would cower in fear and freeze.
In 1951 John Bowlby developed the concept of attachment theory. He argued that infants are genetically predisposed to form an attachment with their mothers. This statement was based off his study of children separated from their homes during World War Two, commissioned by the World Health Organization. In the first few months of life, the sole purpose of any child’s behaviour is to survive. This, more often than not, results in actions that reduce the risk of harm and increase the chances of longevity. Of these behaviours, some argue that the most influential is attachment behaviour. “Attachment behaviour is any form of behaviour that results in a person attaining or maintaining proximity to some other clearly identified individual who is conceived as better able to cope with the world”(Bowlby, 1982). Therefore, children will make an effort to stay close to and under the protection of their primary caregiver. According to Webster, “through interactions with their primary caregiver, the child develops expectations and understandings about the workings of relationships. These mental representations of relationships become internalized to the degree that they influence feelings, thought and behaviour automatically and unconsciously” (1999, p.6). Moreover, the response of the identified individual plays a huge role in the child’s perception of the outside world. If the caregiver responds to the child’s needs in a caring and protective manner, the child will feel safe and comfortable in his or her surroundings. Attachment theory is a concept that explores the importance of attachment in respect to direct development. “It is a deep and enduring emotional bond that connects one person to another across time and space” (Bowlby, 1969; McLeod, 2009). It is the relationship that develops within the first year of the infant’s life between them and their caregiver. The theory also relates to the quality of the attachment that is shown in the behavior of the infant (Rieser-Danner, 2016). Attachment theory shows that infants need a close nurturing relationship with their caregiver in order to have a healthy relationship. Lack of response from the caregiver
