Which Type of Business Entity?
Since graduating from college five years ago, you have worked for a national chain of men’s clothing stores. You have held several positions within the company and are currently manager of a local branch store.
Over the past three years, you have observed a pattern in the purchases of men’s suits. You establish that the majority of men’s suit purchases are black, brown, blue, gray, and olive. You also noticed that French cuff shirts are now fashionable, but few stores carry a wide color selection. Since you have always wanted to be in business for yourself, you decide to open a shop that will sell suits that are black, brown, blue, gray, and olive and to carry a wide array of colors of French cuff shirts. Your store will also sell fashionable ties and cuff links. You have decided that your store will brand itself for focusing on men’s fashion; therefore, the name for your store will be “The Style Shop.” You have discussed your plan with a number of people in the industry and they believe your idea is a viable one and have encouraged you to pursue your dream of becoming an entrepreneur.
A new upscale outdoor shopping mall is opening nearby, and you have decided that now is the time to take the plunge and go into business for yourself. After developing a comprehensive business plan that includes marketing strategies and financial projections, you decide to open The Style Shop in the new mall.
One of the things you must decide in the process of transforming your idea into reality is the form of ownership for your new business. Should it be organized as a sole proprietorship, a

- The majority of clothing retailers use mannequins to display their merchandise, with approximately one-third displaying mannequins with a head and two-thirds displaying mannequins without a head. Researchers recruited 126 female participants and assigned them to one of the two mannequin styles (head/headless). Participants were asked to imagine that they wanted to buy a new dress and told that they had gone to a named store to make their purchase. They then viewed the dress displayed on a mannequin (head or headless) and asked whether they would buy the dress. Of the 53 participants viewing the dress displayed on a mannequin with a head, 18 indicated they would buy the dress, while only 10 of the 53 participants viewing the headless mannequin indicated they would buy the dress. - Your uncle and two friends started a small office supply store several years ago. The company has expanded and now has several large locations. Your uncle knows that you are taking a financial accounting class and asks you the following question: “When we first got started, our accountant told us to use LIFO for our inventory. We were paying her a lot of money so we followed that advice. One of our biggest customers is owned by a company located in Italy. Recently, the manager for that company was telling me that their accounting is based on IFRS rather than U.S. GAAP and that IFRS apparently believes that LIFO is theoretically flawed. Why are we using a flawed system? I don’t even what impact LIFO has on our financial statements. I know that we started out this year with 100,000 units that cost $5 each and then we bought another 400,000 units for $8.00. At the end of the year, because of our sales during the period, we only had 100,000 units left. What difference did LIFO make?”arrow_forwardYou are a recently qualified accountant and have accepted a job as financial controller for a well- established family business which supplies equipment to photographers, both by mail order and from its warehouse outlet. Its customers range from enthusiastic amateurs through to part-time professionals and owners of busy studios. The customers' payment methods reflect their diversity. There are credit card transactions and customers with 30-day credit business accounts. There is also a surprisingly large number of customers who collect their goods from the warehouse and pay in cash. You are told that cash payment probably reflects the nature of the customers' own receipts, as some photographers will often be paid in cash for weekend wedding assignments. In your first week at the company, the sales director (the principal shareholder's son) brings to you a cheque in settlement of the account of a major customer. What is the probability that a current visitor to the web site is female? Suppose that 30% of RunningWithTheDevil’s female visitors previously visited LetsRun.com and 10% of male customers previously visited LetsRun.com. If the current visitor to RunningWithTheDevil’s web site previously visited LetsRun.com, what is the revised probability that the current visitor is female? Should the RunningWithTheDevil’s web site display the special offer that appeals to female visitors or the special offer that appeals to male visitors?arrow_forward
- You are an accounting student at Berkeley College and will not graduate for another year. But because of your excellent grades so far, you have been able to land a job in the purchasing department of a retailer. One of the purchasing agents in your company is negotiating for the receipt of a very large order of uninsured goods from a supplier. The purchasing agent is able to get a better deal on the goods if they are shipped FOB shipping point rather than FOB destination. The agent doesn’t know the difference between these two concepts. He also doesn’t understand why choosing one over the other should make any difference to the company. As a student of accounting at Berkeley College, you know well the difference between these 2 concepts and you know why one would be a better choice over the other in the case of uninsured goods. Please explain these two concepts in this discussion and tell the purchasing agent which shipping method is preferable and why.arrow_forwardCase scenario: You are a newly hired accountant for Sushi Beeber, Inc., a retail company specializing in apparel for small pets. The company would like to expand its apparel line to include sweaters for cats. Sushi Beeber has found several manufacturers that offer competitive prices to ensure cost of goods sold is low. Because the company receives merchandise from different manufacturers and the cat sweaters will be commoditized, the company needs to develop an internal accounting system to keep track of inventory cost. You think that the weighted average cost method may help the company stay up-to-date with the inventory cost as purchase cost changes over time. Your task is to create a spreadsheet that can calculate the inventory cost based on purchases and sales for the month.
