A man foolishly tries to fish a burning piece of bread from a toaster with a metal butter knife and comes into contact with 120-V ac. He does not even feel it since, luckily, he is wearing rubber-soled shoes. What is the minimum resistance of the path the current follows through the person?
A person grasps the ends of an electrically conducting copper wire in each hand. The wire
has a cross-sectional area of 4.0x106 m² and its surface is not insulated. If the person's hands
are wet, the resistance of the possible electrical pathway from one hand, up the arm, across
the chest and down into the other hand is about 1 kQ.
(a) A current of 10 mA can “freeze" the muscles so the hands are clenched around the
wires. Estimate the potential difference between the ends of the wire which would
cause this.
(b) How much power is dissipated in the person's body if this current flows?
(c) The ends of the wire are connected to make a circuit that includes a battery, If the
person grasps the wire with hands 0.20 m apart, comment on the resistances of the
possible paths of electric current. The resistivity of copper is 1.7×108 Qm.
A fisherman has netted a torpedo ray. As he picks it up, this electric fish creates a short-duration 50 V potential difference between his hands. His hands are wet with salt water, and so his skin resistance is a very low 100 Ω. What current passes through his body? Will he feel this DC pulse?

The parts of the body that are most sensitive to electric currents are the brain, the chest muscles and the nerve centers that controls respiration and the heart. A current of 1mA passing through the body will barely be noticeable, but a current of 80mA will usually be fatal unless it is immediately stopped.
