Which of the following tissues is not part of a bone as an organ?
- dense connective
- cartilage
- muscle
- blood
Introduction :
Bone is a connective tissue which has a hardened matrix. It is an organ composed of different components such as blood, bone marrow, cartilage, adipose tissue, fibrous connective tissue and nervous tissue.
Answer to Problem 1PL
Correct answer :
The correct answer is option (c) Muscle.
Explanation of Solution
Explanation/justification for the correct answer :
Option (c) Muscle. Muscle tissues are characterized by the presence of elongated cells called muscle fibers, which can contract to create bodily movements. There are three types of muscle tissues namely; skeletal, smooth and cardiac muscles. Skeletal muscles are found attached to the bone but it is not a part of the bone. So, the correct answer is option (c).
Explanation for incorrect answer :
Option (a) Dense connective. Dense connective tissue is one of the types of fibrous connective tissue where more space is occupied by fiber then cells and ground substances. Dense connective tissue can be grouped as regular and irregular connective tissue. Irregular connective tissue has closely packed collagen fibers running in random directions and less number of blood vessels. It is found in the sheath covering the bones making dense connective tissue is a part of the bone. So, this is an incorrect option.
Option (b) Cartilage. Cartilage is made of a flexible rubbery matrix. Hyaline, elastic and fibrocartilage are the three types of cartilage. Hyaline cartilage is present on the articular surface of the long bones. Fibrocartilage is found at points where tendons insert on bones near articular hyaline cartilage. So, this is an incorrect answer.
Option (d) Blood. Medullary cavity and spaces of spongy bone consist of bone marrow. Bone marrow produces blood cells by the process called hematopoiesis. So, this is an incorrect answer.
