Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The relation between temperature and density from 0-1000m depth should be determined.
Concept introduction:
The ocean water is a mixture of salt, water, sea debris and other chemicals released from the ocean life and materials present in the ocean. The temperature of the ocean is higher in the upper region, as this region is penetrated by the sunlight, but in depth, the temperature of the ocean decreases. The salinity also changes with the change in the temperature.
Answer to Problem 128A
Up to 1000 meters, the density increases with decrease in temperature.
Explanation of Solution
The temperature of the water near the surface is high as it receives adequate amount of sunlight, as the depth increases, the temperature starts falling. With a decrease in the temperature up to 1000 meters, the density of the water increases. As depth is increases further, density is almost constant and the temperature decreases slightly.
