To determine: The genome comparison between the per mega-base pair of genomic DNA in humans and rice.
Introduction: The genes are the sequence of
Explanation of Solution
Thesize of the human genome is 3384 megabase pairs, whereas the genome size of rice, Oryza sativa is 373 to 400 megabase pairs. The number of human genes is around 35000 whereas the genome ofricecontains about 45000 to 56000 genes.
The ratio between the genome size of rice and humans will be about 10:1. The number of functional genes in rice is more than in human even though the genome size is ten times smaller than humans. The genomes in figure 24.1 that are most like humans in terms of the ratio of genes to base pairs are mouse and chimpanzee that are Mus musculus and Pan troglodytes, respectively.

BIOLOGY
- What percentage of the DNA in the genome actually corresponds to genes? How much is actually protein-coding exons? What makes up the rest?arrow_forwardAfter numerous herbaceous plants had their genomes sequenced, a woody plant finally joined the group, Populus trichocarpa (black cottonwood). Give and explain three reasons why this specific tree was chosen. Give and explain two reasons for the importance of adding a woody plant to the list of completed plant genome sequences.arrow_forwardExplain the likely evolutionary origin of mitochondrial and chloroplast genomes. How have the sizes of the mitochondrial and chloroplast genomes changed since their origin? How has thisoccurred?arrow_forward
- The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster has about 2 x 10^8 base pairs of DNA per haploid genome, of which about 75% in nonrepeated DNA. The DNA is distributed among four pairs of homologous chromosomes, which have a total of about 5,000 visible bands when in polytene forms in the salivary gland. The number of genes initially estimated from mutational studies was also about 5,000 but recent DNA sequencing studies suggest that the gene number may be somewhat higher. a. Why was it tempting to speculate that each band corresponds to a single gene? What does this suggest about the number of different proteins Drosophila can make? Does that seem like a reasonable number to you? b. Assuming all the nonrepeated DNA is uniformly distributed in the chromosomes, how much nonrepeated DNA (in base pairs) is there in average band?arrow_forwardAntibiotics such as chloramphenicol, tetracycline, and erythromycin inhibit protein synthesis in bacteria, but have no effect on the synthesis of proteins encoded by eukaryotic nuclear genes. Cycloheximide inhibits the synthesis of proteins encoded by nuclear genes, but has no effect on bacterial protein synthesis. How might these compounds be used to determine which proteins are encoded by mitochondrial and chloroplast genomes?arrow_forwardWhen comparing evolutionary similarities between different genes within a gene family, it is usually more straightforward to compare genes by using the protein sequences of gene products rather than DNA sequences of the genes themselves. Explain why this is the case. (Write 5 points)arrow_forward
- Which one of the following options most accurately describes how the ~3000 megabases (Mb; ~3,000,000,000 nucleotides) of the haploid human genome are distributed on chromosomes? The haploid human genome is distributed on autosomes 1-22 and X and Y (so, 24 chromosomes). The haploid human genome is distributed on the homologous pairs of autosomes 1-22 and X and Y (so, 46 chromosomes). The haploid human genome is distributed on a single chromosome (so, 1 chromosome). The haploid human genome is distributed on one pair of homologous chromosomes (so, 2 chromosomes).arrow_forwardWhen the human genome sequence was finally completed, scientists were surprised to discover that the genome contains far fewer genes than expected. How many genes are present in the human genome? Scientists have also found that there are many more different kinds of proteins in the human cells that there are different genes in the genome. How can this be explained?arrow_forwardGiven our knowledge of genome sizes in different organisms, would you predict that Homo sapiens or the two-toed salamander (Amphiuma means) has the larger genome?arrow_forward
- Using a laser beam, you isolated several R bands from human chromosomes. Answer the following questions What kinds of genes are present in R bands? Which isochors do you expect to be present in the R band? What class of interspersed repeats will be present in R bands? What class of tandem repeats do you expect to find in RG bands? Would you expect to find telomere sequences in some R bands?arrow_forwardHow do the following genomic features of prokaryotic organisms compare with those of eukaryotic organisms? How do they compare among eukaryotes? a. Genome size b. Number of genes c. Gene density (bp/gene) d. Number of exonsarrow_forwardThe Hemoglobin gene has two very common alleles: HbS and HbA. Bob’s professor asks him to draw the chromosomes for an individual that is HbSHbA and label the alleles. Bob draws this (below). Explain why Bob is wrong and then draw it correctly. FOXP2 is a gene in humans; humans that have mutated copies of FOXP2 often have trouble speaking. It is on Chromosome 7, which is about 160 million base pairs long.
