24.7 Skills for applying the wave model of light
Babinet’s principle Babinet's principle states that the diffraction pattern of complementary objects is the same. For example, a rectangular slit produces the same diffraction pattern on a screen as a rectangular obstacle of the same size as the slit, provided that the incident beam is wider than the slit or the obstacle. Determine the width of a hair that, when irradiated with laser light of wavelength 630 nm, produces a diffraction pattern on a screen with the first minimum 2.5 cm on the side of the central maximum. The screen is 2.0 m from the hair.

- Question Three Two aluminium samples, A and B, are to be examined using Bragg reflection. For sample A the first-order Bragg reflection from (111) planes occurs at an angle of 25°00', while for sample B the first order Bragg reflection from (111) planes was at 25°20'. Aluminium atoms are 1.8 x 10-10 m diameter and form an FCC structure. X-radiation of wavelength 1.52 x 10-10 m is used for the analysis of two samples of aluminium. Answer the following questions: (i) Calculate the lattice parameter of an aluminium atom. (ii) Calculate the interplanar distances for the two samples. (ii) Which sample shows pure aluminium, and what is the reason for the difference? (iv) Mention four uses of pure aluminium.arrow_forwardQUESTION 7 A beam of monochromatic light is diffracted by a slit of width 0.620 mm. - 2 Problem 2 Assume two adjacent interstellar gas clouds with known thickness dị and d2 found in front of an astronomical light source. Suppose that this source emits a beam of radiation with known specific intensity 1, as it enters the first cloud of interstellar gas. Calculate the specific intensity I, immediately after this beam has traversed the two clouds of gas. Assume that the densities (p1 and p2) and the opacities (k,1 and ky,2) are constant within the clouds and are known quantities and that these clouds possess no emissivity.
