FRET (fluorescence resonance energy transfer) is a mechanism of energy transfer between two fluorophores. It can be used to detect the host cells that are targeted by a bacterial pathogen. The pathogen targeted host cells exhibit fluorescence due to FRET and can be sorted by flourescence activated cell sorter (FACS).
